Judges 6:21

Listen to this article

“Then the angel of the Lord put forth the end of the staff that was in his hand, and touched the flesh and the unleavened cakes; and there rose up fire out of the rock, and consumed the flesh and the unleavened cakes. Then the angel of the Lord departed out of his sight.”

Context:The book of Judges recounts a cycle of sin, judgment, repentance, and deliverance that the Israelites experienced after entering the Promised Land. In this particular chapter, the Israelites were being oppressed by the Midianites due to their disobedience to God’s commands. God called upon Gideon to deliver Israel from their oppressors.

Analysis:

  • The presence of the angel of the Lord:In this verse, we encounter the angel of the Lord who appears to Gideon. The angel represents the presence of God and brings a message from Him. It’s important to note that throughout the Old Testament, the angel of the Lord is often understood to be a manifestation of God Himself, carrying out His will.
  • The staff and the fire:The angel of the Lord touches the flesh and unleavened cakes with the end of his staff. This action causes fire to come forth from the rock, consuming the offering. Fire is often associated with God’s presence and His acceptance of an offering (see Leviticus 9:24). It signifies His approval and the initiation of a divine encounter.
  • Symbolism of the fire:The fire consuming the offering could represent the acceptance of Gideon’s worship and the confirmation of God’s presence. It signifies God’s willingness to work through Gideon and to bring about deliverance for the Israelites. Fire is also a symbol of purification, suggesting that God was purifying Gideon for the task at hand.
  • The departure of the angel of the Lord:After the fire consumes the offering, the angel of the Lord departs from Gideon’s sight. This departure marks the conclusion of the encounter. It suggests that the purpose of the angel’s appearance and the manifestation of God’s power in this moment had been fulfilled.

Application:

  • God’s presence and acceptance:The story reminds us that God is present and active in our lives, even in times of difficulty. When we approach Him with sincerity and obedience, He accepts our worship and is willing to work through us to accomplish His purposes.
  • Confirmation of God’s calling:Just as God called Gideon to a specific task, each one of us has a purpose and calling in life. The confirmation and acceptance of Gideon’s offering can encourage us to seek confirmation and guidance from God as we discern our own calling and step out in faith.
  • God’s power and purification:The fire consuming the offering illustrates God’s power to purify and refine us. When we surrender ourselves to Him, He works in us, transforming our lives and preparing us for His service. It reminds us to submit to His refining work, allowing Him to remove anything that hinders our walk with Him.
  • Divine encounters:This passage highlights the possibility of encountering God in unexpected ways. Gideon encountered the angel of the Lord and witnessed His power. Similarly, we should remain open to encountering God in our lives, knowing that He can reveal Himself and His will to us through various means.

Remember, the study of Scripture should be approached with humility and a desire to seek God’s truth. As you read and study the Bible, it can be helpful to consult commentaries, study guides, or seek guidance from knowledgeable individuals to gain further insights.
