Judges 6:28

Posted on 24 November 2024
Listen to this article

“Then the men of the city said unto Joash, Bring out thy son, that he may die: because he hath cast down the altar of Baal, and because he hath cut down the grove that was by it.”

Context:Judges 6 recounts the story of Gideon, a judge raised by God to deliver the Israelites from the oppression of the Midianites. During this time, the Israelites had turned away from God and were worshiping idols, particularly the false god Baal. Gideon, however, was chosen by God to lead the Israelites back to Him.

Verse Analysis:

“Then the men of the city said unto Joash”: The men of the city, upset by Gideon’s actions against the altar of Baal, confront Joash, who was Gideon’s father. It shows that Gideon’s actions had caused a stir in the community. “Bring out thy son, that he may die”: The people demanded that Gideon be handed over for punishment, even to the extent of death. They considered Gideon’s actions a severe offense that warranted a severe penalty.

Meaning and Lessons:

The significance of the altar of Baal:The altar of Baal was a place of false worship. Gideon’s act of tearing it down was a bold declaration against idolatry and a commitment to God’s commandments. It symbolizes the need to remove all forms of false worship or idols from our lives and remain steadfast in serving the one true God.

The hostility towards those who oppose idolatry:Gideon faced opposition and threats from the community because of his act of obedience to God. This highlights the resistance and hostility that often arises when we stand up against prevailing sinful practices or false beliefs. It requires courage and faith to withstand such opposition and remain faithful to God’s commands.

God’s call to individual obedience:Gideon’s actions were in response to God’s call and guidance. Despite the risks and potential consequences, Gideon obeyed God’s command to tear down the altar. This passage reminds us of the importance of individual obedience to God’s voice, even when it goes against the prevailing culture or expectations.

The consequences of righteousness:Gideon’s actions had significant consequences, both in terms of the opposition he faced and the subsequent liberation of the Israelites from the Midianites. It serves as a reminder that living a righteous life and standing up for God’s truth can lead to positive changes and victories, even if the initial response is negative or challenging.

Overall, Judges 6:28 emphasizes the importance of remaining faithful to God, even in the face of opposition and hostility. It encourages us to tear down any false worship or idols in our lives and to stand firm in our obedience to God’s commands, trusting that He will bring about His purposes through our faithfulness.
