Judges 6:36

Listen to this article

“And Gideon said unto God, If thou wilt save Israel by mine hand, as thou hast said,”

Context:Judges 6 recounts the story of Gideon, one of the judges of Israel. The Israelites had been oppressed by the Midianites for seven years due to their disobedience to God. In response to their cries for help, God called Gideon to deliver the Israelites from their oppressors.

Seeking Confirmation:In verse 36, Gideon is conversing with God, seeking confirmation of His calling. Gideon acknowledges that God has promised to save Israel through him but desires reassurance. This verse reveals Gideon’s humility and dependence on God’s guidance.

Gideon’s Request:Gideon expresses his desire for a sign from God, demonstrating his need for confirmation and his willingness to follow God’s instructions. He acknowledges that the deliverance of Israel rests solely in God’s power and not his own.

God’s Faithfulness:Throughout the book of Judges, we see a pattern of God raising up judges to deliver Israel from their enemies. Gideon, like others before him, seeks confirmation and reassurance from God. In response to Gideon’s request, God graciously provides signs to strengthen Gideon’s faith and confidence in His plan.

Application:Gideon’s example teaches us several valuable lessons:

  • Humility:Gideon acknowledges his own weakness and the need for God’s intervention. It reminds us to approach God with humility, recognizing our limitations and relying on His strength.
  • Seeking Confirmation:It is not wrong to seek confirmation from God when we are unsure of His will. However, we must do so with a sincere heart, seeking His guidance rather than testing His faithfulness.
  • Trusting God’s Promises:Gideon’s request for a sign is based on God’s previous promises. We, too, can trust in the promises of God’s Word and seek confirmation in prayer and His guidance through the Holy Spirit.
  • Trusting God’s Plan:Judges 6:36 reminds us that God’s plans are often beyond our understanding, and we may need reassurance along the way. Gideon’s faith grew as he witnessed God’s faithfulness, and ours can too if we trust in His plan and seek His guidance.

Overall, Judges 6:36 highlights Gideon’s humble request for confirmation and his recognition of God’s power. It teaches us the importance of seeking God’s guidance, trusting His promises, and relying on His strength to fulfill His plans.
