Judges 6:40

Posted on 24 November 2024
Listen to this article

"And God did so that night: for it was dry upon the fleece only, and there was dew on all the ground."

Context:The book of Judges chronicles the period of Israel’s history after they entered the Promised Land, where they were governed by a series of leaders called judges. The people of Israel had fallen into a cycle of disobedience, idolatry, and oppression. In Judges 6, the Israelites were under the oppression of the Midianites because of their disobedience to God. God raised up Gideon as a judge to deliver them from their enemies.

Background:Begin by reading the entire chapter of Judges 6 to get a broader understanding of the context. Note the cycle of Israel’s disobedience, God’s discipline, and the raising of a deliverer.

Gideon’s Doubts:In Judges 6:36-40, Gideon asks God for a sign to confirm that He will save Israel through him. Gideon places a fleece of wool on the threshing floor and asks that if the fleece is wet with dew while the ground is dry, it would be a confirmation from God. God grants Gideon’s request and performs the sign.

Symbolism of the Sign:Explore the significance of Gideon’s fleece request. Discuss how Gideon’s request for a sign may indicate his doubts or lack of confidence in God’s promise. Despite his doubts, God accommodates Gideon’s request, showing His patience and understanding.

God’s Faithfulness:Reflect on how God’s fulfillment of the sign demonstrates His faithfulness. Despite Gideon’s uncertainties, God proves Himself trustworthy by granting Gideon’s request. Discuss how God often meets us in our doubts and provides reassurance when we seek Him sincerely.

Lessons for Today:

  • Trusting God:Consider the importance of trusting God’s promises even when faced with uncertainty or doubts. Reflect on times when you may have doubted God’s faithfulness and discuss how you can strengthen your trust in Him.
  • Seeking Confirmation:Discuss the appropriate ways to seek confirmation from God. While it is essential to trust in God’s Word, there may be times when we seek additional confirmation through prayer, seeking counsel from mature believers, or observing God’s providence.
  • God’s Patience:Recognize God’s patience and grace in dealing with our doubts and fears. Despite Gideon’s lack of confidence, God still worked through him to accomplish His purposes. Discuss how God’s patience should encourage us to draw near to Him, even in times of uncertainty.
  • God’s Power:Reflect on how God’s power is demonstrated through the supernatural sign of the dew on the fleece. Consider how God’s power is still at work today and discuss examples of His faithfulness in your life or in the lives of others.

Remember to pray and ask the Holy Spirit for guidance and understanding as you study God’s Word.
