Judges 6:6

Posted on 24 November 2024
Listen to this article

“And Israel was greatly impoverished because of the Midianites; and the children of Israel cried unto the Lord.”

Historical context:The Book of Judges describes a period in Israel’s history after they had entered the Promised Land. The Israelites had settled in the land, but they faced challenges and struggles as they interacted with the surrounding nations. In this verse, we find Israel in a state of impoverishment due to the oppression of the Midianites.

Oppression by the Midianites:The Midianites were one of the neighbouring nations that repeatedly oppressed the Israelites during the time of the judges. They would invade the land, destroy crops, and confiscate livestock, causing great hardship and poverty for the Israelites. This verse highlights the severity of the Midianite oppression, which led to the impoverishment of the people.

Israel’s cry to the Lord:Despite the challenges they faced, the Israelites recognised their need for divine intervention. In their distress, they cried out to the Lord for help. This demonstrates their dependence on God and their acknowledgment that only He could deliver them from their circumstances.

The cycle of sin:The Book of Judges often portrays a cycle that the Israelites went through during this time. The cycle typically consisted of Israel’s disobedience, oppression by foreign nations, the people’s cry for help, and God raising up a judge or deliverer to rescue them. This verse marks the stage of the cycle where Israel is oppressed and cries out to the Lord for deliverance.

God’s response:As we continue reading Judges chapter 6, we find that God answers Israel’s cry by raising up Gideon as a deliverer. Gideon would play a significant role in leading Israel to victory over the Midianites. God’s response to the cry of His people demonstrates His faithfulness and His willingness to intervene on behalf of those who seek Him.

Application:Judges 6:6 reminds us of the importance of turning to God in times of difficulty. Just as the Israelites cried out to the Lord when they were impoverished and oppressed, we can bring our burdens, struggles, and needs before God. He is our ever-present help in times of trouble (Psalm 46:1). This verse also teaches us about God’s faithfulness. Even when we face challenges and hardships, we can trust that God hears our cries and is ready to come to our aid.

Overall, Judges 6:6 serves as a reminder of the Israelites’ dependence on God and their recognition of His power to deliver them from their adversaries. It encourages us to seek God’s help, knowing that He is attentive to our cries and faithful to intervene in our lives.
