Judges 8:16

Listen to this article

“And he took the elders of the city, and thorns of the wilderness and briers, and with them he taught the men of Succoth.”

Context:Judges 8 is part of the account of Gideon’s victorious campaign against the Midianites. Gideon was chosen by God to deliver the Israelites from the oppression of the Midianites. In this chapter, Gideon and his 300 men pursued the Midianite army and defeated them.

Gideon’s leadership:In this verse, we see Gideon displaying leadership qualities by taking the elders of the city into his confidence. Gideon recognised the importance of unity and collaboration in accomplishing God’s purposes.

Thorns and briers:Gideon used thorns and briers from the wilderness to teach the men of Succoth. It is likely that Gideon employed these objects as symbols of the harshness and difficulties faced by the people. He wanted to teach them the importance of enduring hardships and overcoming obstacles in their pursuit of victory and freedom.

Lessons in perseverance:Gideon’s action of using thorns and briers can be seen as a metaphor for the challenges and trials that God’s people often face. The thorns and briers represent the obstacles, opposition, and struggles encountered on the path to fulfilling God’s purposes. Gideon wanted to instil in the men of Succoth the need to endure and remain steadfast in their faith despite the hardships they might encounter.

Spiritual application:As Christians, we also face various trials and difficulties in our journey of faith. The lessons from Gideon’s teaching can be applied to our lives today. We are called to persevere and remain faithful in the midst of challenges, knowing that God is with us and will provide the strength and grace we need to overcome.

Leadership lessons:Gideon’s leadership approach provides valuable insights for leaders. He engaged the elders and used practical, tangible examples to teach his men. This demonstrates the importance of effective communication and using relatable illustrations to convey messages and inspire others.

  • Endurance and faith:We should be prepared for challenges and difficulties in our walk with God. When faced with obstacles, we must trust in His guidance and strength, knowing that He is with us and will enable us to overcome.
  • Leadership:As leaders, we should involve and communicate with those under our influence. Like Gideon, we can use relatable examples and illustrations to inspire and teach others. Collaboration and unity are essential in achieving shared goals.
  • Perseverance in ministry:Those involved in ministry should expect challenges and opposition. However, we should remain steadfast, relying on God’s power and grace, as we press forward to fulfil the purposes He has called us to.

Remember to read the surrounding verses and chapters for a complete understanding of the context and message of Judges 8.
