Judges 8:22

Listen to this article

“Then the men of Israel said unto Gideon, Rule thou over us, both thou, and thy son, and thy son’s son also: for thou hast delivered us from the hand of Midian.”

Context: The Book of Judges recounts the period in Israel’s history when they were governed by various leaders known as judges. Gideon was one of these judges who rose to prominence after God called him to deliver Israel from the oppression of the Midianites. Gideon led a small group of men and with God’s help, they miraculously defeated the Midianite army.

Acknowledging God’s Deliverance:In this verse, the men of Israel express their gratitude to Gideon for his leadership and military success in delivering them from the hand of Midian. It is important to note that they acknowledge God’s hand in this victory, as they attribute their deliverance to Gideon, but ultimately recognize that it was God who worked through him.

The Desire for a Monarchy:The request of the men of Israel for Gideon and his descendants to rule over them reflects a desire for a monarchy or a dynastic succession. They wanted a stable, hereditary leadership that would continue for generations. This desire is in contrast to the system of judges, where leaders were raised up by God for specific periods to deliver Israel from their enemies.

God as the True King:Although the people wanted Gideon and his descendants to rule over them, it is important to remember that God was the ultimate King of Israel. Throughout the Old Testament, God’s desire was for His people to acknowledge His authority and kingship over them. The request for a human king would later be granted, but it would bring its own challenges and consequences.

Application:

  • Reflect on times when God has delivered you from difficult situations or challenges. How can you express gratitude to Him for His faithfulness?
  • Consider any areas in your life where you may be desiring control or seeking human leadership instead of submitting to God’s kingship. How can you surrender those areas to Him?
  • Pray and ask God to help you trust in His sovereign rule over your life and to guide you in making decisions that align with His will.
