Judges 8:5

Listen to this article

“And he said unto the men of Succoth, Give, I pray you, loaves of bread unto the people that follow me; for they be faint, and I am pursuing after Zebah and Zalmunna, kings of Midian.”

Context:Judges 8 records the account of Gideon’s pursuit of the Midianite kings Zebah and Zalmunna. Gideon had led a small army of three hundred men to defeat the Midianites, who had been oppressing the Israelites for seven years. In this verse, Gideon arrives at the town of Succoth, seeking assistance for his weary troops.

The Importance of Hospitality:Gideon’s request to the men of Succoth for loaves of bread highlights the value of hospitality. After a long and exhausting battle, Gideon’s men were hungry and tired. Gideon, as a leader, recognised their need and appealed to the people of Succoth for help. Hospitality was an important cultural value in biblical times, and Gideon’s request for sustenance demonstrates the necessity of caring for those in need.

Faith and Obedience:Gideon’s pursuit of the Midianite kings displayed his faith and obedience to God’s call. Despite starting with a small army, Gideon had witnessed God’s power and deliverance in battle. He trusted God’s promise that the Israelites would be victorious over their oppressors. Gideon’s actions reveal his determination to fulfill God’s purpose and bring justice to the Israelites.

The Response of Succoth:Unfortunately, the men of Succoth did not provide the bread Gideon requested. In the following verses, Gideon encountered similar resistance from the men of Penuel. Their refusal to assist Gideon and his troops might have stemmed from fear, lack of faith, or a desire to remain neutral in the conflict. Regardless of their reasons, their actions contrasted with Gideon’s faith and obedience.

Lessons for Believers:This passage prompts us to consider our response to those in need and our willingness to support others in their pursuit of God’s will. It challenges us to reflect on our own faith and obedience, ensuring that we align our actions with God’s calling. Additionally, it serves as a reminder that our decisions can have consequences and impact others’ journeys of faith.

Application:As believers, we are called to show hospitality, kindness, and support to those in need, both within our faith communities and to those outside. We should be willing to extend a helping hand to those who are weary and seeking God’s purposes in their lives. Like Gideon, we should also strive to demonstrate faith and obedience in pursuing God’s will, trusting in His promises and provision.
