Listen to this article

"And he took the people, and divided them into three companies, and laid wait in the field, and looked, and, behold, the people were come forth out of the city; and he rose up against them, and smote them."

Context:To understand the significance of Judges 9:43, it’s essential to have some background information about the book of Judges. The book of Judges describes a period in Israel’s history after Joshua’s death when Israel was ruled by a series of judges, who were raised up by God to deliver the Israelites from their oppressors. Judges 9 focuses on Abimelech, one of Gideon’s sons, who sought to establish a monarchy over Israel.

In Judges 9:43, we find Abimelech taking action against the people who opposed him. After killing his brothers and establishing his rule in Shechem, there was growing resentment towards Abimelech’s leadership. The people of Shechem revolted against him, which led to a conflict.

Dividing the people into three companies:Abimelech divided his forces into three groups to strategically position them. Dividing the troops allowed him to surround and attack the people who came out of the city.

Laying wait in the field:Abimelech’s forces hid in the field, lying in wait for the people to emerge from the city. This ambush tactic was meant to surprise the opposition and give Abimelech’s forces an advantage.

Rising up against them and smiting them:When the people came forth from the city, Abimelech’s forces attacked them. They rose up and struck the people, possibly using the element of surprise to gain the upper hand in the confrontation.

Lessons from Judges 9:43:

  • The consequences of power-seeking:Abimelech’s story highlights the dangers of pursuing power and authority for selfish reasons. Abimelech’s ruthless actions, including killing his own brothers, resulted in division and bloodshed.
  • The importance of integrity in leadership:Abimelech’s actions were driven by ambition, pride, and a desire for power. As leaders, it is crucial to lead with integrity, humility, and a heart for serving others rather than seeking personal gain.
  • The consequences of rebellion:The people of Shechem revolted against Abimelech, and their actions led to a violent confrontation. This serves as a reminder that rebellion and resistance can often result in negative consequences and further discord.
  • Strategic planning and its implications:Abimelech’s decision to divide his forces into three companies and lay wait in the field demonstrates the importance of strategic planning in military tactics. However, it also underscores the dangers of using strategic planning for nefarious purposes.

Overall, Judges 9:43 highlights the consequences of power-seeking and rebellion, reminding us of the importance of integrity in leadership and the potential negative outcomes of strategic planning used for selfish reasons.
