Listen to this article

“And Abimelech gat him up to mount Zalmon, he and all the people that were with him; and Abimelech took an axe in his hand, and cut down a bough from the trees, and took it, and laid it on his shoulder, and said unto the people that were with him, What ye have seen me do, make haste, and do as I have done.”

Context: Judges 9 recounts the story of Abimelech, a son of Gideon, who sought to become a ruler over Israel. After killing his brothers, Abimelech faced opposition from the city of Shechem. As he prepared to attack the city, the people sought refuge in a tower. In verse 48, Abimelech devises a plan to set the tower on fire.

Symbolism of Mount Zalmon: Mount Zalmon is mentioned briefly in this verse. Although little is known about its exact location, the mention of the mountain may hold symbolic significance. Mountains are often associated with places of encounter with God, and in this context, it may reflect the pride and arrogance of Abimelech in his pursuit of power.

Abimelech’s actions: Abimelech takes an axe and cuts down a bough from the trees. He then places it on his shoulder and instructs his followers to imitate his actions. Abimelech’s actions can be seen as a symbolic representation of his determination to carry out destructive plans. By cutting down the bough and carrying it on his shoulder, he displays his intention to use it as a tool to set the tower on fire.

Leadership and manipulation: Abimelech’s actions reveal his leadership style, characterized by manipulation and coercion. By inviting his followers to imitate him, he seeks to exert control over them and ensure their loyalty. His use of symbolism and spectacle aims to inspire fear and compel his people to follow his destructive agenda.

Lessons for believers: This passage offers several lessons for believers. It serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of pursuing power and influence at any cost. Abimelech’s actions highlight the destructive consequences of pride, manipulation, and deceit. It reminds us of the importance of humility, integrity, and ethical leadership.

God’s perspective: Although this passage does not explicitly mention God’s intervention, the overall narrative of Judges reveals God’s sovereignty and justice. God allows the consequences of Abimelech’s actions to unfold, ultimately leading to his downfall. It serves as a reminder that God sees and judges the actions of individuals, even those who seek power and harm others.

Overall, Judges 9:48 showcases the dangerous pursuit of power by Abimelech and serves as a warning against similar ambitions. It also highlights the importance of ethical leadership and the need for individuals to align their actions with godly principles.
