Judges 9:7

Posted on 3 December 2024
Listen to this article

"And when they told it to Jotham, he went and stood in the top of mount Gerizim, and lifted up his voice, and cried, and said unto them, Hearken unto me, ye men of Shechem, that God may hearken unto you."

Context:The book of Judges is a historical account of Israel after they entered the Promised Land. It describes a cycle of disobedience, oppression, repentance, and deliverance. Judges 9 focuses on the story of Abimelech, one of Gideon’s sons, who aspired to be a ruler over Israel. In this verse, Jotham, another son of Gideon, addresses the people of Shechem, who were considering making Abimelech their king.

Jotham’s Response:When Jotham learned about the intentions of the people of Shechem, he went to Mount Gerizim, a significant location associated with blessings and curses in Israel’s history. Jotham lifted up his voice and cried out, calling the people’s attention to hear his message.

Appeal for Attention:Jotham’s plea to “hearken” or listen is directed specifically to the men of Shechem. He desires their undivided attention and wants them to consider his words seriously.

God’s Response:Jotham’s statement “that God may hearken unto you” suggests that he understood the importance of seeking God’s favour and approval in their decision-making. Jotham implies that if they listen to him and act wisely, God will listen to their prayers and bless them.

Spiritual Lessons:

  • The Power of Words:Jotham’s choice to address the people and deliver a message shows the influence and significance of words. Our words can have a profound impact on others, and we should use them wisely and responsibly.
  • Seeking God’s Approval:Jotham emphasises the need to seek God’s favour and blessing in our decisions and actions. When we align ourselves with God’s will, He listens to our prayers and blesses our endeavours.
  • Responsibility in Leadership:Jotham’s response reveals a concern for the well-being of the people and the consequences of their choices. Leaders should act with integrity, considering the impact of their decisions on others.

Application:

  • Attentive Listening:Like the men of Shechem, we should be willing to listen attentively when others speak, valuing their perspectives and considering their wisdom.
  • Seeking God’s Guidance:Whenever we face important decisions, seeking God’s guidance and wisdom should be our priority. We can find direction and discernment through prayer, studying the Bible, seeking counsel, and listening to the Holy Spirit.
  • Responsible Leadership:If we find ourselves in positions of leadership or influence, we should exercise our responsibilities with integrity, considering the well-being and interests of those we lead.

Remember to read the surrounding verses and explore the rest of the chapter for a comprehensive understanding of the story and its implications.
