Judges Chapter 10

Summery

In Judges 10, the narrative focuses on two new judges who arose to deliver Israel from their oppressors. After the death of Abimelech, a man named Tola became the next judge and led Israel for 23 years. Following his reign, another judge named Jair emerged and ruled for 22 years. During their time, Israel once again turned away from God and worshipped other gods, provoking the Lord’s anger. As a consequence, God allowed the Philistines and the Ammonites to oppress the Israelites for 18 years.

Realizing the gravity of their situation, the Israelites repented and sought the Lord’s help. They put away their foreign gods and confessed their sins, acknowledging God as their only true deliverer. Moved by their sincerity, God could no longer endure their misery and decided to rescue them. He reminded them of their previous deliverance from Egypt, the Amorites, and the Ammonites, and promised to save them once more.

However, despite their repentance, the Israelites continued to face challenges. In the following chapter, the story unfolds with the selection of Jephthah as the next judge to deliver Israel from their enemies.
