Leviticus 1:12

Posted on 8 August 2023
Listen to this article

“And he shall cut it into his pieces, with his head and his fat: and the priest shall lay them in order on the wood that is on the fire which is upon the altar.”

Context:Leviticus is the third book of the Bible and focuses on the laws and regulations given to the Israelites by God through Moses. It specifically deals with the various types of offerings and sacrifices that were to be offered at the Tabernacle, the place of worship for the Israelites.

Significance of the Offering:Leviticus 1 describes the burnt offering, which was a voluntary offering presented to the Lord. This offering was meant to express devotion, commitment, and surrender to God. The offerer would bring an animal from their flock, such as a bull, sheep, or goat, as an offering.

Cutting the Animal into Pieces:In Leviticus 1:12, it is mentioned that the animal was to be cut into pieces, including its head and fat. This act symbolized the complete dedication and surrender of the offering to God. By cutting the animal into pieces, the offerer acknowledged that every part of their life and possessions belonged to God and was to be used for His purposes.

Laying the Pieces on the Wood and Fire:The priest was instructed to lay the pieces of the offering in order on the wood that was on the fire upon the altar. The altar was the designated place of sacrifice and worship. The fire on the altar symbolized the presence of God and His acceptance of the offering. By placing the pieces on the wood and fire, the offerer demonstrated their faith in God’s acceptance of their offering and their desire for communion with Him.

Spiritual Lessons:

  • Total Surrender:The burnt offering and the act of cutting the animal into pieces teach us about the importance of wholehearted surrender to God. As Christians, we are called to offer ourselves as living sacrifices, dedicating every aspect of our lives to God (Romans 12:1).
  • Sacrificial Offering:The burnt offering points to the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross. Just as the animal’s blood was shed and its body consumed by the fire, Jesus shed His blood and offered His body as a sacrifice for the forgiveness of sins once and for all (Hebrews 10:10).
  • Acceptance and Communion:The acceptance of the offering by God through the fire on the altar represents the acceptance and communion believers have with God through faith in Jesus Christ. Through His sacrifice, we can have a personal relationship with God and approach Him with confidence (Hebrews 4:16).

Conclusion:

Leviticus 1:12 provides insights into the burnt offering, emphasizing the concepts of surrender, sacrifice, and communion with God. It also points to the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus Christ and the grace and forgiveness available through Him. As believers, we are called to offer our lives as living sacrifices and continually seek a close relationship with God.
