Leviticus 1:17

Posted on 8 August 2023
Listen to this article

“And he shall cleave it with the wings thereof, but shall not divide it asunder: and the priest shall burn it upon the altar, upon the wood that is upon the fire: it is a burnt sacrifice, an offering made by fire, of a sweet savour unto the Lord.”

Context:Leviticus is the third book of the Bible and is part of the Pentateuch, also known as the Torah or the Law of Moses. The book of Leviticus focuses on the laws and regulations given by God to the Israelites regarding various aspects of worship, sacrifices, and holy living.

Sacrificial system:Leviticus 1:17 describes the burnt offering, one of the sacrifices prescribed by God for the Israelites. This verse provides specific instructions on how the burnt offering is to be prepared and presented to the Lord.

Symbolism and significance:

  • Atonement and dedication:The burnt offering was a voluntary act of worship, where the entire animal was offered on the altar and consumed by fire. This act symbolized complete surrender, dedication, and atonement for sin before God.
  • Sweet savour:The burnt offering was described as a “sweet savour” or a pleasing aroma to the Lord. It represented the worshiper’s desire to draw near to God and their acknowledgment of His holiness and authority.
  • Unity and completeness:The phrase “he shall cleave it with the wings thereof, but shall not divide it asunder” indicates that the offering was to be kept intact. This unity and completeness signify the integrity of the sacrifice and the unbroken devotion of the worshiper to God.

Application for believers today:

  • Surrender and dedication:The burnt offering reminds us of the need for surrender and dedication in our worship and service to God. Just as the animal was fully given to God, we are called to offer our lives wholly to Him, presenting ourselves as living sacrifices (Romans 12:1).
  • A pleasing aroma:Our worship and obedience should be pleasing to God. As we live in accordance with His Word, seek His will, and follow His commands, our lives become a pleasing fragrance that brings joy to the heart of God.
  • Integrity and unity:The concept of offering the sacrifice without dividing it reminds us of the importance of unity among believers. We are called to love one another, bear each other’s burdens, and be united in purpose, reflecting the unity of Christ’s body, the Church.

In conclusion, Leviticus 1:17 speaks of the burnt offering, highlighting the themes of surrender, dedication, atonement, and pleasing worship before God. It serves as a reminder for us today to offer ourselves fully to God, to live in a manner that pleases Him, and to strive for unity among believers.
