“And the remnant of the oil that is in the priest’s hand he shall pour upon the head of him that is to be cleansed: and the priest shall make an atonement for him before the LORD.”

Historical and Contextual Background:Leviticus is the third book of the Old Testament and is part of the Torah, which contains the laws and regulations given by God to the people of Israel through Moses. Leviticus focuses on the priestly duties, rituals, and laws concerning various aspects of worship and purity.

Chapter 14 deals with the purification rituals for those who have been afflicted with leprosy, which was considered a severe and contagious skin disease in ancient times. The passage specifically addresses the anointing of the person to be cleansed after the prescribed sacrifices and rituals have been completed.

Symbolism and Meaning:

  • The Remnant of Oil: In the context of this verse, the oil represents an important symbol of consecration, anointing, and blessing. In the Old Testament, oil was often used in religious ceremonies to symbolise the presence and favour of God. The remnant of oil poured on the head of the one being cleansed signifies God’s anointing and restoration.
  • The Priest’s Role: The priest acted as a mediator between God and the people, performing various rituals and sacrifices on their behalf. Here, the priest’s pouring of the oil indicates his role in applying God’s blessings and making atonement for the person being cleansed. The act of anointing was an integral part of the purification process, signifying the person’s cleansing and restoration to the community.
  • Atonement: The anointing with oil after the prescribed sacrifices symbolises the completion of the purification process. Atonement refers to the act of reconciliation or making amends for wrongdoing. In this context, the anointing is an essential element in the final step of the purification ritual, signifying the person’s reconciliation with God and the community.

Spiritual Lessons and Application:

  • God’s Restoration:The anointing with oil in this verse signifies God’s desire to restore and renew those who have been separated or afflicted. It serves as a reminder that God is in the business of healing, forgiveness, and reconciliation. No matter how dire our circumstances may seem, God’s grace can bring restoration and wholeness.
  • The Role of Mediation:Just as the priest acted as a mediator between God and the people, Jesus Christ is the ultimate Mediator between humanity and God. Through His sacrifice on the cross, Jesus provided a way for us to be cleansed from sin and reconciled with God. He is the One who pours the oil of His Spirit upon us, bringing healing and restoration to our lives.
  • The Power of Atonement:The concept of atonement in this verse reminds us of the atoning work of Jesus on the cross. His sacrifice provides complete forgiveness and reconciliation with God for all who believe in Him. Through faith in Jesus, we can experience true cleansing and restoration, being made new in Him.
  • The Anointing of the Holy Spirit:In the New Testament, the anointing with oil finds its fulfilment in the anointing of the Holy Spirit. Believers are anointed with the Holy Spirit, who empowers, equips, and guides them in their spiritual journey. The anointing represents God’s presence and favour upon His people, enabling them to live a life that brings glory to Him.

In conclusion, Leviticus 14:18 emphasises the role of the priest in anointing the person to be cleansed and making atonement for them. This verse foreshadows the ultimate cleansing and restoration that we receive through Jesus Christ. It reminds us of God’s desire to heal, forgive, and reconcile us to Himself, and the role of the Holy Spirit in empowering and guiding believers.
