Leviticus 14:28

Listen to this article

“And the priest shall put of the oil that is in his hand upon the tip of the right ear of him that is to be cleansed, and upon the thumb of his right hand, and upon the great toe of his right foot, upon the blood of the trespass offering.”

Context:Leviticus is a book of the Bible that contains detailed instructions for the Israelites regarding their worship, rituals, and laws. Chapter 14 specifically deals with the cleansing of a leper or someone who has recovered from a skin disease. This chapter outlines the process of ritual purification for such individuals.

Symbolic Actions:In Leviticus 14:28, the priest is instructed to take some oil and apply it to specific parts of the person’s body who is being cleansed. The right ear, thumb of the right hand, and great toe of the right foot were anointed with oil. These symbolic actions held spiritual significance and conveyed important lessons.

Symbolism:

  • Right Ear: The anointing of the right ear symbolized consecration and purification of one’s hearing. It suggests that the individual should carefully listen to and obey the Word of God. It signifies the importance of paying attention to God’s instructions and seeking His guidance.
  • Thumb of the Right Hand: The anointing of the thumb symbolized consecration and purification of one’s actions and deeds. It represented the person’s ability to work, serve, and engage in righteous activities. The anointing indicated that the individual’s actions should align with God’s commands and reflect holiness.
  • Great Toe of the Right Foot: The anointing of the great toe symbolized consecration and purification of one’s walk and journey. It represented the person’s daily conduct and lifestyle. Just as the foot guides the body in its path, the anointing indicated that the individual should walk in obedience to God’s laws and follow the righteous path.

Spiritual Lessons:

  • Active Listening:The anointing of the right ear reminds us to actively listen to God’s voice through His Word and the prompting of the Holy Spirit. It emphasizes the importance of attentiveness and obedience to His instructions.
  • Righteous Actions:The anointing of the thumb highlights the significance of our actions and deeds. It reminds us to engage in righteous activities and use our skills and abilities for the glory of God.
  • Holy Lifestyle:The anointing of the great toe emphasizes the importance of living a holy and righteous life. It reminds us that our daily conduct should reflect our commitment to following God’s commandments.

Application:

  • Devoted Study:We should actively study the Scriptures, listen to biblical teachings, and seek understanding to ensure that our minds are aligned with God’s truth.
  • Intentional Service:We should strive to use our talents and abilities in ways that honor God and benefit others. Our actions should be guided by love, compassion, and righteousness.
  • Consistent Walk:We should cultivate a lifestyle that consistently reflects our faith. Our daily choices, interactions, and decisions should be influenced by our commitment to follow God’s principles.

It is important to note that the ceremonial rituals described in Leviticus have been fulfilled through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. As Christians, we are no longer under the Old Testament law but are saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ (Ephesians 2:8-9). However, studying these passages can provide us with insights into the principles and character of God and can help us apply spiritual lessons to our lives.
