Leviticus 14:32

Listen to this article

“This is the law of him in whom is the plague of leprosy, whose hand is not able to get that which pertaineth to his cleansing.”

Context:Leviticus 14 provides detailed instructions for the purification of a person who has been healed from leprosy or a skin disease. In this particular verse, God establishes the law regarding a person who is unable to afford the required offerings for his cleansing.

Historical and Cultural Background:

  • Leprosy was a serious disease during biblical times and was considered unclean. The Israelites had specific laws and rituals for dealing with leprosy to maintain purity within the community.
  • The regulations for cleansing the leper were given by God through Moses to ensure the restoration of the person to the community and the sanctuary.

Symbolic Meaning:

  • Leprosy in the Bible often represents sin and its defiling effects on individuals and the community. The process of cleansing a leper can be seen as a symbol of spiritual cleansing and restoration.
  • The inability of a person to afford the required offerings points to the fact that salvation and forgiveness are not based on one’s ability to pay or perform certain actions but are a result of God’s grace and provision.

God’s Provision for the Poor:

  • Leviticus 14:21-32 outlines different offerings required for the cleansing process. However, if a person was impoverished and unable to afford the prescribed offerings, an alternative provision was made.
  • In such cases, the person was to bring two turtledoves or two pigeons, which were more affordable. This allowed even the poor to receive the opportunity for cleansing and restoration.

Lessons for Today:

  • God’s concern for the poor:This passage highlights God’s concern for the marginalised and economically disadvantaged. It demonstrates that God’s laws and provisions take into account the individual’s circumstances, and He ensures that all have equal access to restoration.
  • Salvation by grace:The inability of a person to meet the requirements of the law on their own points to the need for God’s grace and provision in our lives. Just as the poor were provided an alternative offering, we are saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ, not by our own efforts or resources.
  • God’s desire for restoration:The entire process of cleansing the leper demonstrates God’s desire to restore individuals to a state of purity and bring them back into the community. It emphasises God’s redemptive nature and His willingness to restore and reconcile those who have been separated.

In conclusion, Leviticus 14:32 reminds us of God’s provision for the poor and His desire to restore individuals to a state of purity and community. It also points to the need for God’s grace in our lives and highlights that salvation is not based on our abilities or resources but is a result of His unmerited favour.
