Leviticus 14:6

Posted on 10 September 2023
Listen to this article

“As for the living bird, he shall take it, and the cedar wood, and the scarlet, and the hyssop, and shall dip them and the living bird in the blood of the bird that was killed over the running water.”

Context:Leviticus is a book in the Old Testament of the Bible and is part of the Torah, which contains instructions given by God to the Israelites through Moses. Leviticus primarily deals with laws and regulations concerning worship, sacrifice, and the holiness of the Israelites.

In Leviticus 14, God provides instructions for the cleansing of a leper who has been healed. Leprosy was a serious and highly contagious disease during that time, and specific rituals were required for someone who had been healed to be declared clean and restored to the community.

Explanation:Leviticus 14:6 describes one of the steps in the ritual of cleansing a leper. The verse mentions a living bird, cedar wood, scarlet, hyssop, and the blood of a killed bird.

  • Living bird:The two birds mentioned in the context represent the healing and cleansing of the leper. The living bird symbolises freedom and restoration after being healed from the leprosy.
  • Cedar wood:Cedar wood was known for its aromatic properties and was often used in purification rituals. It represents the strength and stability of God’s cleansing power.
  • Scarlet:Scarlet was a vibrant red colour and symbolises the blood and sacrifice required for the atonement of sin. The crimson colour of the scarlet thread represents the cleansing power of God’s forgiveness.
  • Hyssop:Hyssop was a plant used for ceremonial purposes, especially in cleansing rituals. It was dipped in the blood of the slain bird and used to sprinkle the leper as part of the purification process.
  • Blood of the bird:The blood of the bird that was killed represents the life and sacrifice given to atone for the leper’s sins and bring about cleansing and restoration.

Significance:This ritual symbolises the cleansing and restoration of the leper, allowing them to reenter the community and resume their normal life. The use of the living bird, cedar wood, scarlet, hyssop, and blood emphasises the importance of blood sacrifice, purification, and the redemptive power of God.

From a spiritual perspective, this passage can point to Jesus Christ, who fulfilled the symbolic significance of these rituals. Jesus became the ultimate sacrifice, shedding His blood for the forgiveness of sins and providing cleansing and restoration to all who believe in Him.

Application:While we no longer follow the specific rituals outlined in Leviticus for cleansing lepers, this passage can remind us of the spiritual cleansing and restoration we receive through faith in Jesus Christ. It highlights the importance of recognising our need for forgiveness, the sacrificial nature of Christ’s death, and the transformative power of His blood to cleanse us from sin.

As believers, we should strive to live in holiness, continually seeking God’s forgiveness and relying on His cleansing power. We can also extend forgiveness and restoration to others, showing the love and grace of Christ in our relationships.

In conclusion, Leviticus 14:6 reveals a significant step in the cleansing ritual for a healed leper. It symbolises the restoration, forgiveness, and redemptive power of God. As Christians, we can reflect on the ultimate fulfilment of these symbols in Jesus Christ and apply the principles of forgiveness, cleansing, and restoration in our own lives.
