Leviticus 15:31

Posted on 10 September 2023
Listen to this article

“Thus shall ye separate the children of Israel from their uncleanness; that they die not in their uncleanness when they defile my tabernacle that is among them.”

Context:The book of Leviticus is part of the Pentateuch, the first five books of the Bible, traditionally attributed to Moses. Leviticus contains instructions and regulations given by God to the Israelites concerning their worship, daily life, and moral conduct. Chapter 15 specifically deals with regulations regarding bodily discharges and issues related to ritual impurity.

Purification and Holiness:Leviticus emphasises the concept of ritual purity and holiness. God instructs the Israelites on how to maintain cleanliness in order to approach and worship Him in the tabernacle, the sacred dwelling place of God among them. The laws in this chapter address various bodily discharges, such as emissions from men and women, and the procedures to be followed for purification.

Separation from Uncleanness:Leviticus 15:31 speaks of the importance of separating the children of Israel from their uncleanness. Uncleanness, in this context, refers to states that render an individual ritually impure and temporarily unfit for worship. By separating the Israelites from their uncleanness, God ensures their well-being and prevents them from dying in their impure state. This demonstrates God’s concern for the spiritual and physical welfare of His people.

Defiling the Tabernacle:The verse warns against defiling the tabernacle with uncleanness. The tabernacle was a sacred place where God’s presence dwelt among the Israelites. Any uncleanness brought into the tabernacle would defile it, making it unfit for God’s holy presence. Therefore, it was crucial for the Israelites to maintain purity and avoid defiling the tabernacle.

Symbolic and Spiritual Significance:The regulations found in Leviticus 15 served as a reminder to the Israelites of the importance of maintaining purity in their relationship with God. While these laws focused on physical cleanliness, they also had symbolic and spiritual significance. They taught the Israelites the need for moral purity and holiness in their daily lives, reflecting God’s character and His desire for them to be a holy people.

Application for Today:As Christians, we are not under the Mosaic Law described in Leviticus, as Jesus Christ fulfilled the Law and established a new covenant. However, the principles of purity, holiness, and separation from uncleanness remain applicable. We are called to maintain moral and spiritual purity, recognising that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19-20).

In conclusion, Leviticus 15:31 emphasises the importance of separation from uncleanness for the Israelites to avoid defiling the tabernacle and ensure their well-being. It serves as a reminder of God’s concern for His people’s purity and their need to approach Him with reverence. While the specific regulations may not apply directly to Christians today, the underlying principles of purity and holiness still hold relevance for believers, highlighting the importance of maintaining a close relationship with God.
