Leviticus 18:15

Listen to this article

"Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy daughter-in-law: she is thy son’s wife; thou shalt not uncover her nakedness."

Leviticus 18 is a chapter that primarily deals with various laws concerning sexual morality and relationships within the Israelite community. In this particular verse, the focus is on the prohibition against engaging in any sexual relations with one’s daughter-in-law.

Context:To understand the verse better, it is essential to consider the broader context of Leviticus 18. The chapter contains a list of prohibitions regarding sexual relationships, including incestuous relationships, adultery, and various other unlawful unions. The purpose of these laws was to establish boundaries and maintain holiness and purity within the Israelite community.

The significance of the daughter-in-law:The daughter-in-law mentioned in this verse refers to the wife of one’s son. In the cultural and social context of ancient Israel, the relationship between a father-in-law and daughter-in-law was one of close familial ties but carried specific boundaries and restrictions.

Prohibition of uncovering nakedness:The phrase “uncover the nakedness” in Leviticus often refers to sexual relations or engaging in sexual acts. In this context, it emphasizes the act of sexual intimacy between a man and his daughter-in-law.

Maintaining marital sanctity:The verse emphasizes the sanctity of the marital bond between a husband and wife. By prohibiting a father-in-law from engaging in sexual relations with his daughter-in-law, the verse upholds the importance of marital fidelity and emphasizes the exclusivity of the husband-wife relationship.

Respect for family relationships:The verse also highlights the significance of maintaining proper familial relationships and boundaries. It reinforces the understanding that the daughter-in-law should be viewed and treated as the wife of the son, and any attempt to violate that relationship is considered a transgression.

The enduring nature of the command:While Leviticus contains many laws that were specifically applicable to the Israelites in their cultural and historical context, the underlying principles of holiness, sexual purity, and respect for marital relationships still hold relevance today. Although we are no longer under the Old Testament law, the moral principles taught in the Bible guide believers to maintain sexual purity, faithfulness within marriage, and respect for family relationships.

It’s important to note that the laws in Leviticus 18 were given to the Israelites under the Mosaic covenant and were specifically applicable to that particular time and culture. As Christians, our approach to sexual ethics and relationships is primarily guided by the teachings of Jesus Christ and the New Testament. However, studying these Old Testament laws can provide insights into God’s character, the principles of holiness, and the significance of maintaining purity in our relationships.

Remember to always consult a trusted spiritual leader, pastor, or Bible scholar for a more in-depth understanding of the scriptures and their application to your life.
