Leviticus 18:16

Posted on 14 September 2023
Listen to this article

“Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy brother’s wife: it is thy brother’s nakedness.”

Context:Leviticus is a book of the Old Testament that primarily deals with the religious and moral laws given by God to the Israelites through Moses. Leviticus 18 focuses specifically on laws regarding sexual relationships and forbidden sexual practices.

Meaning of “uncover the nakedness”:In the context of Leviticus and other similar passages, “uncovering the nakedness” is a euphemism for engaging in sexual relations with someone. It refers to engaging in sexual acts that violate the boundaries of proper sexual conduct.

Prohibition of the act:Leviticus 18:16 explicitly forbids a man from having sexual relations with his brother’s wife. This prohibition is rooted in the concept of maintaining the sanctity of the marriage relationship and the importance of familial loyalty. The focus is on preserving the rights and dignity of both the husband and wife.

Respect for marriage:This verse emphasizes the sanctity of the marriage covenant. It recognises the exclusivity and commitment within the marriage relationship, prohibiting any sexual interaction with the wife of one’s own brother.

Protection of familial bonds:The commandment against uncovering the nakedness of one’s brother’s wife reflects the importance of maintaining the integrity of family relationships. It discourages actions that could lead to division, betrayal, or dishonour within the family unit.

Application to today:Although the specific cultural context and customs of ancient Israel are different from those of contemporary society, the underlying principles of respect for marriage, fidelity, and the sanctity of family remain relevant. Christians today are called to honour and uphold the institution of marriage, promoting love, faithfulness, and healthy family relationships.

Fulfillment in Christ:In the New Testament, Jesus further emphasised the sacredness of marriage, highlighting the importance of faithfulness and the unity between husband and wife (Matthew 19:4-6). Through His teachings, Jesus extended the moral principles found in the Old Testament to a higher standard, emphasising the inward transformation of the heart and the importance of love and purity in relationships.

It’s important to approach biblical teachings with reverence and seek further guidance from spiritual leaders, pastors, or scholars who can provide additional insights and interpretations within the broader context of the Bible.
