Leviticus 18:7

Posted on 13 September 2023
Listen to this article

“The nakedness of thy father, or the nakedness of thy mother, shalt thou not uncover: she is thy mother; thou shalt not uncover her nakedness.”

Context:Leviticus 18 contains a list of various sexual prohibitions and regulations given by God to the Israelites through Moses. These laws were meant to establish holiness and purity among God’s chosen people, and they covered various relationships and acts that were considered immoral or unlawful.

Understanding the prohibition:Leviticus 18:7 specifically addresses the issue of uncovering the nakedness of one’s mother. The phrase “uncover her nakedness” refers to engaging in any form of sexual activity with one’s mother, which includes incestuous relationships. This verse emphasizes the importance of maintaining proper boundaries within familial relationships and the sanctity of the family unit.

Moral and spiritual implications:This prohibition highlights the significance of respecting and honoring the roles and relationships established by God. The mother holds a unique position in a person’s life, deserving reverence, love, and care. Engaging in incestuous relationships violates the natural order set by God and disrupts the family structure, leading to grave consequences for both individuals involved and the community as a whole.

The broader context:Leviticus 18 consists of various sexual prohibitions given to the Israelites, and these laws are part of the larger body of legislation known as the Mosaic Law. The purpose of these laws was to separate God’s people from the surrounding nations and their immoral practices, promoting holiness and maintaining a distinct identity as a chosen nation. The sexual prohibitions served to establish moral boundaries, protect the family unit, and promote a healthy and righteous society.

The fulfillment in Christ:While these laws in Leviticus served their purpose in the Old Testament era, it is important to understand that Christians are no longer under the Mosaic Law. Jesus Christ, through His death and resurrection, fulfilled the requirements of the Law and established a new covenant. Christians are now called to live according to the teachings of Jesus, which emphasize love, purity, and moral conduct based on the principles of the Kingdom of God.

Application for today:Although Christians are not bound by the specific regulations of the Mosaic Law, the underlying principles and values remain relevant. Leviticus 18:7 teaches us the importance of maintaining healthy and respectful boundaries within our family relationships. It reminds us to honour our parents, treat them with dignity, and refrain from engaging in any form of sexual immorality or inappropriate conduct with family members.

In conclusion, Leviticus 18:7 provides a specific prohibition against uncovering the nakedness of one’s mother, emphasizing the importance of maintaining appropriate boundaries within family relationships. While the Mosaic Law no longer binds Christians, the underlying principles of honouring and respecting our parents and avoiding sexual immorality remain relevant for us today.
