Leviticus 19:22

Listen to this article

“And the priest shall make an atonement for him with the ram of the trespass offering before the LORD for his sin which he hath done: and the sin which he hath done shall be forgiven him.”

Context:Leviticus 19 is part of the laws and regulations given to the Israelites by God through Moses. This chapter contains a variety of commandments covering different aspects of daily life, including laws about sexual immorality, idolatry, Sabbath observance, and various social and ethical issues.

Explanation:Leviticus 19:22 specifically deals with the process of atonement for a person who has committed a sin. When an individual committed a trespass or unintentional sin, they were required to bring a ram as a trespass offering to the priest. The priest would then make atonement for the person’s sin before the Lord, and the sin would be forgiven. Atonement is the act of making amends for sin or wrongdoing. In the Old Testament, the shedding of blood through animal sacrifices was a means of atonement. The ram offered as a trespass offering symbolized the transfer of guilt and the person’s desire to make things right with God. This verse emphasizes the importance of seeking forgiveness for sins committed, even if they were unintentional or inadvertent. It demonstrates God’s willingness to extend forgiveness and provide a way for His people to reconcile with Him. Through the atonement process, the Israelites could experience forgiveness and restoration of their relationship with God. However, it’s important to note that the sacrificial system and the laws of Leviticus were specific to the Israelites under the Old Covenant. The shedding of animal blood pointed forward to the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus Christ, who became the perfect and final atonement for the sins of humanity under the New Covenant. In the New Testament, we see Jesus referred to as the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world (John 1:29).

Application:As Christians, we can draw several principles from Leviticus 19:22:

  • Acknowledgment of sin:This verse reminds us of the importance of recognizing our sins, even those that are unintentional. It’s crucial to be honest with ourselves and God about our shortcomings.
  • Seeking forgiveness:Just as the Israelites were instructed to bring their offering to the priest for atonement, we need to come before God, confess our sins, and seek His forgiveness. Through Jesus Christ, we have direct access to God and can find forgiveness by confessing our sins to Him (1 John 1:9).
  • Understanding the role of Jesus:While the Old Testament sacrifices provided temporary atonement, Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross provided permanent forgiveness for all who believe in Him. His death and resurrection opened the way for us to be reconciled with God, and by accepting Him as our Savior, we can experience true forgiveness and restoration.
  • Gratitude for God’s grace:Leviticus 19:22 highlights God’s mercy and willingness to forgive His people. As recipients of God’s grace, we should be grateful for His forgiveness and strive to live in a way that honors Him.

In summary, Leviticus 19:22 reminds us of the process of atonement for sins in the Old Testament and points us to the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus Christ in the New Testament. It emphasizes the importance of acknowledging our sins, seeking forgiveness, and being grateful for God’s grace.
