Leviticus 19:7

Posted on 14 September 2023
Listen to this article

“And if it be eaten at all on the third day, it is abominable; it shall not be accepted.”

Context:Leviticus 19 contains a series of commandments and instructions given by God to the Israelites through Moses. These commandments cover various aspects of life, including moral, social, and religious practices. The purpose of these laws was to set the Israelites apart as a holy nation and to teach them how to live in obedience to God.

Meaning and Application:Leviticus 19:7 addresses the issue of consuming sacrificial meat. In the context of this verse, the third day refers to the period after an animal was sacrificed to God. According to the Law, if the meat of the sacrificial animal was not eaten by the third day, it became abominable and was not to be accepted.

Obedience to God’s commands:This verse highlights the importance of obedience to God’s instructions. God required the Israelites to follow specific guidelines regarding the consumption of sacrificial meat. Disregarding these instructions and eating the meat on the third day was considered an abomination.

Proper use of sacred offerings:The sacrificial system was an integral part of the Israelite worship and relationship with God. This verse emphasizes the need for the Israelites to handle the sacred offerings with reverence and respect. Failing to consume the meat within the designated time frame undermined the purpose of the sacrifice.

Diligence and timeliness:The verse reminds us of the significance of being diligent and prompt in fulfilling our responsibilities. The Israelites were expected to eat the sacrificial meat in a timely manner. Likewise, in our lives, we should strive to be diligent in carrying out our duties and responsibilities, not neglecting or delaying them.

Holiness and consecration:Leviticus emphasizes the importance of holiness and consecration in the lives of God’s people. By following the instructions given in Leviticus, the Israelites were set apart from the surrounding nations and devoted to God. Similarly, as Christians, we are called to live holy and consecrated lives, separated from the world and dedicated to God’s service.

Christological significance:While Leviticus 19:7 specifically applies to the sacrificial system under the Mosaic Law, it also points to the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus Christ. The sacrificial system of the Old Testament foreshadowed the perfect and complete sacrifice of Christ on the cross. Through His sacrifice, we are redeemed and made acceptable to God. As Christians, we no longer need to observe the rituals and regulations of the Old Testament Law because Jesus fulfilled them on our behalf.

Conclusion:Leviticus 19:7 reminds us of the importance of obedience, reverence, and diligence in our relationship with God. While the specific instructions regarding sacrificial meat may not apply to us today, the underlying principles of holiness, consecration, and faithful obedience are timeless. As we study the Old Testament, we can learn valuable lessons that help us understand God’s character and His desire for us to live according to His ways.
