Leviticus 20:8

Posted on 14 September 2023
Listen to this article

“And ye shall keep my statutes, and do them: I am the Lord which sanctify you.”

Context:The book of Leviticus is part of the Old Testament and is primarily concerned with the religious and ceremonial laws given by God to the Israelites through Moses. It contains instructions on various aspects of worship, sacrifices, purity, and ethical living.

The Call to Obedience:In Leviticus 20:8, God emphasizes the importance of obeying His statutes. The verse begins with a command to keep His statutes. God’s statutes refer to His laws and commandments given to guide His people in righteous living.

God’s Sanctifying Presence:The verse continues by stating, “I am the Lord which sanctify you.” The word “sanctify” means to set apart or make holy. Here, God reminds the Israelites that He is the one who sanctifies them, setting them apart as His chosen people. The Israelites were to acknowledge God’s role in their sanctification and respond by adhering to His statutes.

Significance of Obedience:Obedience to God’s statutes was a fundamental aspect of the covenant relationship between God and His people. By obeying His commands, the Israelites demonstrated their faith, trust, and loyalty to God. Obedience also reflected their commitment to live in accordance with God’s moral and ethical standards.

Application:While Leviticus contains laws specific to the Israelites and their ancient context, there are principles we can draw from this verse for our lives today:

  • Importance of God’s Word:Just as the Israelites were instructed to keep God’s statutes, we are called to study, understand, and obey God’s Word. The Bible serves as a guide for our lives, providing wisdom, direction, and moral standards.
  • God’s Sanctifying Work:As believers in Christ, we understand that it is God who sanctifies us through the work of the Holy Spirit. We are set apart as God’s people and called to live holy lives. This calls for a personal commitment to align our actions and attitudes with God’s will.
  • Obedience and Faith:Obedience is an expression of our faith and trust in God. It is through our obedience that we demonstrate our love for Him and our desire to honor Him in all areas of our lives.
  • Covenant Relationship:Just as the Israelites had a covenant relationship with God, believers today have a covenant relationship with Him through Jesus Christ. Our obedience to God’s commands is an outpouring of our gratitude for His love and salvation.

Remember that while Leviticus provides valuable insights into God’s character and His dealings with His people, we should also interpret it in light of the New Testament and the teachings of Jesus Christ, who fulfilled the law.
