Listen to this article

“Neither shall he go out of the sanctuary, nor profane the sanctuary of his God; for the crown of the anointing oil of his God is upon him: I am the LORD.”

Leviticus 21:12 is part of a larger section in the book of Leviticus that provides instructions regarding the qualifications and conduct of the priests. This verse specifically addresses the behaviour and responsibilities of the high priest, who held a unique role in the religious practices of ancient Israel.

  • Sanctuary Boundaries:The verse begins by stating that the high priest should not go out of the sanctuary. This restriction emphasised the high priest’s consecration and the separation of his service to God from ordinary activities. It signifies a distinct dedication to his priestly duties and a separation from the secular aspects of life.
  • Sanctity of the Sanctuary:The verse also emphasises the importance of not profaning the sanctuary of God. This underscores the need for reverence and respect within the sacred space. The sanctuary was considered holy, and any action that would defile or desecrate it was strictly prohibited.
  • The Crown of Anointing Oil:The phrase “the crown of the anointing oil of his God is upon him” refers to the anointing oil used in the consecration of the high priest. The anointing oil was a symbol of God’s authority and empowerment for the priestly office. The oil represented the presence of the Holy Spirit and the divine commission bestowed upon the high priest.
  • Divine Declaration:The verse concludes with the statement, “I am the LORD.” This declaration signifies that these instructions come directly from God. It emphasises the authority behind the regulations and the importance of obedience to God’s commandments.

In summary, Leviticus 21:12 outlines the specific requirements and conduct expected of the high priest. It emphasises the need for the high priest to remain within the sanctuary, not profane it, and recognise the anointing oil as a symbol of his consecration and God’s authority. The verse serves to highlight the holiness and reverence associated with the high priest’s role and underscores the importance of following God’s commandments in matters of worship and service.
