Leviticus 22:14

Listen to this article

“And if a man eat of the holy thing unwittingly, then he shall put the fifth part thereof unto it, and shall give it unto the priest with the holy thing.”

Leviticus 22 is a chapter that provides guidelines for the priests regarding their conduct and the handling of holy offerings. In this particular verse, the focus is on what should be done if a person unintentionally consumes a portion of something that has been consecrated as holy.

Context:Leviticus is a book of the Old Testament that primarily deals with religious laws and regulations for the Israelites. It covers various aspects of their worship, priesthood, cleanliness, and moral conduct. Leviticus 22 is specifically concerned with the rules governing the priests’ participation in eating holy offerings.

Unintentional Consumption:The verse acknowledges the possibility of a person unintentionally eating something that is considered holy. The phrase “unwittingly” indicates that the person did not have knowledge or awareness of the item’s sacred status.

Compensation:When such a situation occurs, the person is required to make amends. The verse states that the individual should add one-fifth of the value of the holy thing to it. This means that if someone unintentionally consumes a portion of a holy offering, they need to provide an additional fifth of its value.

Giving to the Priest:The compensation, consisting of the added one-fifth, is to be given to the priest along with the remaining holy thing. The priest served as a mediator between God and the people, and they were responsible for overseeing the offerings and maintaining the sanctity of the tabernacle or temple.

Importance of Holiness:This verse highlights the significance of holiness and the seriousness with which the Israelites were to treat the things dedicated to God. Even if someone unintentionally violated the sacredness of a holy item, there were consequences, and restitution had to be made.

It’s important to note that Leviticus contains laws and regulations that were specifically applicable to the Israelites during the Old Testament period. Christians today do not follow these specific instructions, as Jesus Christ’s sacrifice fulfilled the requirements of the Old Covenant and established a new covenant (Hebrews 8:6-13).

However, studying these verses can provide insights into the historical context, the concept of holiness, and the meticulous observance required in ancient Israelite worship. Additionally, it can serve as a reminder of the reverence and respect we should have for things dedicated to God in our own lives.
