Leviticus 22:15

Posted on 16 September 2023
Listen to this article

“And they shall not profane the holy things of the children of Israel, which they offer unto the LORD.”

This verse is part of a larger context in Leviticus that deals with the regulations and instructions for the priests and the offerings presented to the Lord. In this specific verse, God commands the priests not to profane the holy things that the children of Israel offer to Him.

To better understand the significance of this verse, we need to explore its surrounding context. Leviticus is primarily concerned with outlining the laws and regulations that the Israelites were to follow in order to maintain their holiness and relationship with God. The book emphasizes the importance of maintaining purity and approaching God with reverence.

In Leviticus 22, the focus is on the regulations for the priests regarding their eligibility to eat the holy offerings. The chapter begins by establishing that only the priests and their families are allowed to partake of the holy offerings, and any non-priest who eats them unintentionally becomes liable to make restitution (Leviticus 22:10-13).

Leviticus 22:14 provides further instructions on the consumption of holy offerings:

“And if a man eat of the holy thing unwittingly, then he shall put the fifth part thereof unto it, and shall give it unto the priest with the holy thing.”

Here, we see that if an ordinary Israelite unknowingly eats a holy offering, he is required to make restitution by giving an additional fifth of its value to the priest. This ensures that the sanctity and holiness of the offerings are upheld.

Building upon this principle, Leviticus 22:15 reinforces the importance of not profaning the holy things offered to the Lord. The priests, who served as mediators between the people and God, were responsible for maintaining the sacredness of these offerings. Profaning the holy things would involve treating them with disrespect or using them in an inappropriate manner, thereby diminishing their sanctity.

The verse serves as a reminder to the priests of their duty to handle the holy offerings with utmost reverence and care. By doing so, they upheld the sacredness of the offerings and demonstrated their commitment to faithfully serve God and His people.

From a broader perspective, this commandment in Leviticus 22:15 reflects God’s desire for His people to approach Him with reverence and honor. It emphasizes the significance of treating the sacred things of God with respect and not trivializing or desecrating them.

While the specific regulations outlined in Leviticus pertain to the ceremonial practices of the Israelites in the Old Testament, the underlying principles of reverence, respect, and holiness remain relevant today. As believers, we are called to approach God with a heart of reverence and honor, recognizing the sacredness of His presence and His Word.

In summary, Leviticus 22:15 highlights the importance of not profaning the holy things offered to the Lord. It reminds the priests of their responsibility to handle the sacred offerings with reverence and care. The verse encourages believers today to approach God with reverence and honor, treating His presence and His Word as holy and sacred.
