Leviticus 22:28

Posted on 16 September 2023
Listen to this article

“And whether it be cow, or ewe, ye shall not kill it and her young both in one day.”

This verse is part of the larger context of Leviticus, which is the third book of the Bible and primarily focuses on the instructions and laws given by God to the Israelites through Moses.

In this particular verse, God is giving a command regarding the offering of sacrifices to Him.

Respect for Life:The verse emphasizes the importance of respecting the sanctity of life. God instructs the Israelites not to kill both a mother animal and its young on the same day. This command reflects God’s concern for the preservation of life and the recognition of the bond between a mother and its offspring.

Sacrificial Regulations:Leviticus contains detailed instructions for the Israelites on various types of offerings and sacrifices to be presented to God. These offerings served as a means of worship, atonement, and maintaining a covenant relationship with God. Leviticus 22:28 specifically addresses the prohibition of offering a mother animal and her young as sacrifices on the same day.

Practical Considerations:The command has practical implications as well. By forbidding the simultaneous killing of a mother and her young, God ensured the continuation of animal populations. This regulation demonstrates God’s wisdom in preserving the order of nature and maintaining the sustainability of the animal kingdom.

Symbolic Meaning:The command also carries symbolic significance. In the Bible, animals were often used as symbols of spiritual truths. The prohibition against killing both a mother and her young on the same day could be seen as a representation of God’s concern for family relationships, nurturing, and the continuity of generations.

Moral Principles:While Leviticus contains many specific instructions given to the Israelites for their unique context, it is essential to recognise the underlying moral principles that can be gleaned from these commandments. Leviticus 22:28 highlights the value of compassion, respect for life, and the importance of family bonds.

As we study this verse, it is essential to remember that Christians today are not bound by the Levitical laws and sacrificial system as outlined in the Old Testament. The death and resurrection of Jesus Christ fulfilled the requirements of the Old Covenant and established a new covenant between God and humanity (Hebrews 9:11-14, 10:1-18). Christians look to Jesus as the ultimate sacrifice for sin and the fulfilment of the Law (Matthew 5:17). However, studying the Old Testament provides valuable insights into God’s character, His relationship with humanity, and the historical context of God’s dealings with the Israelites.

In summary, Leviticus 22:28 teaches us about the sanctity of life, the regulations for sacrifices, practical considerations, and the symbolic meaning of God’s commandments. While no longer applicable in the same way to Christians today, it provides us with important insights into God’s character and principles that can be applied to our lives.
