Leviticus 22:9

Listen to this article

“They shall therefore keep mine ordinance, lest they bear sin for it, and die therefore, if they profane it: I the Lord do sanctify them.”

Context:The book of Leviticus contains various laws and regulations given by God to the Israelites through Moses. Leviticus 22 specifically addresses the regulations concerning the holiness of the priests and the offerings presented to the Lord.

The Importance of Ordinances:In this verse, God emphasises the importance of keeping His ordinances. The word “ordinance” refers to a divine decree or law. God gave specific instructions to the priests regarding the offerings and sacrifices, and He expected them to follow these instructions diligently. Failing to do so would result in sin and potential death.

Sanctification:The verse also highlights the sanctification of the priests. By obeying God’s ordinances, the priests were set apart and consecrated for their holy service. It was God Himself who sanctified them, indicating their special status and role in the worship of God.

Sin and Consequences:The verse warns that if the priests profane God’s ordinances, they would bear the guilt of sin and face the possibility of death. The severity of the consequences reflects the seriousness with which God regards His instructions. It demonstrates the significance of obedience and the reverence required in approaching the holy things of God.

Application for Believers today:While the ceremonial laws and practices described in Leviticus are not directly applicable to Christians today, there are still important lessons we can draw from this verse:

  • Reverence for God: We should approach God with reverence and respect, recognising His holiness. Though we are under the grace of Christ, it is crucial to maintain a reverent attitude towards God and His commands.
  • Obedience to God’s Word: Just as the priests were expected to follow God’s instructions, we should strive to obey God’s Word in our lives. Through the Bible, God provides guidance and principles that shape our conduct and reflect our love for Him.
  • Understanding the consequences of sin: Sin has serious consequences. While the ultimate penalty for sin was paid by Jesus on the cross, there are still temporal consequences for our actions. We should be mindful of the choices we make and seek to live in accordance with God’s commands.
  • Embracing sanctification: As believers, we are called to live holy and set-apart lives. The New Testament teaches that we are a chosen people, a royal priesthood (1 Peter 2:9). We are sanctified through the work of the Holy Spirit in us, and we should strive to reflect this holiness in our thoughts, actions, and attitudes.
