Leviticus 23:32

Posted on 16 September 2023
Listen to this article

“It shall be unto you a sabbath of rest, and ye shall afflict your souls: in the ninth day of the month at even, from even unto even, shall ye celebrate your sabbath.”

This verse specifically refers to the Day of Atonement, which is also known as Yom Kippur.

Let’s break down the key elements and explore their significance:

Sabbath of Rest: The Day of Atonement was considered a solemn Sabbath, a day of complete rest. On this day, the Israelites were commanded to cease from their regular work and devote themselves to worship, prayer, and seeking God’s forgiveness for their sins.

Afflict Your Souls: Afflicting one’s soul refers to self‑denial, humility, and repentance. It involved fasting and abstaining from physical pleasures as a symbol of deep contrition and a desire to turn away from sin. The physical affliction of the body was a reflection of the inner spiritual condition of the heart.

Ninth Day of the Month at Even: The Day of Atonement occurs on the tenth day of the seventh month (Tishrei) of the Hebrew calendar. The Hebrew day starts at sundown, so the ninth day at even refers to the evening that marks the beginning of the tenth day.

From Even Unto Even: The observance of the Day of Atonement lasts from the evening of the ninth day until the evening of the tenth day. It is a 24‑hour period of consecration and seeking forgiveness before God.

The Day of Atonement held significant spiritual meaning for the Israelites. It was the one day in the year when the High Priest would enter the Holy of Holies in the Tabernacle or later in the Temple, offering sacrifices for the sins of the entire nation. The people were called to observe this day with reverence, repentance, and seeking forgiveness for their individual and collective transgressions.

Additionally, this verse emphasizes the importance of observing the Sabbath as a day of rest and spiritual reflection. The concept of the Sabbath is a recurring theme in the Bible, and it serves as a reminder of God’s rest after creation (Genesis 2:2‑3) and the covenant relationship between God and His people.

While the Day of Atonement and its specific observances have ceremonial and historical significance for the Israelites, as Christians, we can draw broader spiritual lessons from this verse. It reminds us of the importance of self‑examination, repentance, and seeking God’s forgiveness for our sins. It also underscores the need for regular times of rest and spiritual renewal in our lives.

Overall, Leviticus 23:32 highlights the solemnity of the Day of Atonement, the significance of observing the Sabbath, and the call for personal and communal repentance before God.
