Leviticus 23:37

Posted on 17 September 2023
Listen to this article

"These are the feasts of the LORD, which ye shall proclaim to be holy convocations, to offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD, a burnt offering, and a meat offering, a sacrifice, and drink offerings, everything upon his day."

Context and Background:Leviticus is part of the Pentateuch, the first five books of the Bible attributed to Moses. It primarily deals with the laws and regulations given to the Israelites by God, including instructions regarding worship, sacrifices, and feasts. Leviticus 23 specifically outlines the appointed feasts or festivals that the Israelites were to observe.

The Feasts of the Lord:Leviticus 23 describes several appointed feasts, also known as the "holy convocations" or sacred assemblies, which were times of special significance and worship for the Israelites. These feasts were to be proclaimed as holy, and specific offerings were to be presented to the Lord.

Offerings Made by Fire:In Leviticus 23:37, it mentions various offerings to be made by fire. These offerings include burnt offerings, meat offerings (grain offerings), sacrifices, and drink offerings. These were prescribed methods of worship in the Old Testament, demonstrating obedience, gratitude, and atonement for sins.

Everything Upon His Day:The phrase "everything upon his day" refers to the specific offerings being presented on their appointed days. Each feast had its own designated offerings and rituals, and the Israelites were instructed to follow them according to the divine calendar.

Spiritual Lessons and Application:Though Leviticus 23:37 pertains to the specific regulations for ancient Israel, we can draw spiritual lessons and principles from it today:

  • Worship and Devotion:The emphasis on holy convocations and offerings highlights the importance of setting aside dedicated times for worship and showing reverence to God. It reminds us to prioritise our relationship with God and give Him our best.
  • Sacrificial Giving:The offerings made by fire represent sacrifices made by the Israelites. In our lives, we can reflect on the principle of sacrificial giving and offering ourselves to God as living sacrifices (Romans 12:1), which involves surrendering our desires and serving Him wholeheartedly.
  • Observance and Obedience:Just as the Israelites were called to observe the appointed feasts on their designated days, we are encouraged to follow God’s instructions and live in obedience to His Word. This includes being attentive to His appointed times of fellowship, such as regular gatherings with other believers.
  • Appreciation for Jesus Christ:The Old Testament feasts and offerings pointed forward to the coming of Jesus Christ, who fulfilled them. Jesus became the ultimate sacrifice, offering Himself as the perfect Lamb of God to atone for our sins. As we study Leviticus, we can see how these rituals foreshadowed the redemptive work of Jesus, deepening our understanding and gratitude for His sacrifice.

Remember, while the specific practices outlined in Leviticus 23:37 may not apply to Christians today, the principles of worship, sacrifice, obedience, and gratitude remain relevant as we seek to honour and serve God in our lives.
