Leviticus 23:4

Posted on 16 September 2023
Listen to this article

“These are the feasts of the LORD, even holy convocations, which ye shall proclaim in their seasons.”

Context:Leviticus is the third book of the Bible and is part of the Torah, the first five books attributed to Moses. It contains laws and regulations given by God to the Israelites to guide their worship and daily life. Leviticus 23 focuses specifically on the appointed feasts or holy convocations that the Israelites were commanded to observe.

The Feasts of the Lord:In Leviticus 23, God outlines several appointed times or feasts that the Israelites were to observe throughout the year. These feasts were important moments for the Israelites to come together in worship, remember their history, and honour God. They were also prophetic in nature, foreshadowing significant events in the life and ministry of Jesus Christ.

Holy Convocations:The term “holy convocations” refers to sacred assemblies or gatherings. During these feasts, the people were called to come together in a designated place to worship God and participate in specific rituals and ceremonies. The purpose of these convocations was to celebrate, commemorate, and seek the Lord’s presence.

Proclaiming in Their Seasons:The feasts were not to be observed at random times but were appointed to occur at specific seasons or times of the year. God wanted the Israelites to follow His calendar and observe these feasts at the designated times. By proclaiming the feasts in their seasons, the Israelites demonstrated their obedience and reverence to God’s instructions.

Application for Today:While the feasts outlined in Leviticus 23 were specifically given to the Israelites as part of their covenant with God, there are spiritual principles that we can draw from them today. These feasts were a foreshadowing of the redemptive work of Jesus Christ. For Christians, understanding the significance of these feasts can deepen our understanding of God’s plan of salvation.

Additionally, the concept of holy convocations reminds us of the importance of gathering together as believers in worship, fellowship, and edification. Just as the Israelites were called to assemble during these feasts, Christians are encouraged to come together as the body of Christ, seeking His presence and strengthening one another in faith.

In conclusion, Leviticus 23:4 emphasises the appointed feasts of the Lord, the significance of holy convocations, and the importance of observing these feasts at their designated seasons. While the feasts were given specifically to the Israelites, there are spiritual principles we can draw from them and apply to our lives as Christians today.
