Leviticus 26:2

Posted on 18 September 2023
Listen to this article

“Ye shall keep my sabbaths, and reverence my sanctuary: I am the LORD.”

Context:Leviticus 26 is a chapter that outlines blessings for obedience and curses for disobedience to the covenant between God and the Israelites. It provides instructions and warnings regarding the consequences of following or neglecting God’s commands.

Observations:

  • "Ye shall keep my sabbaths": This refers to observing the Sabbath day, a day of rest and worship set apart by God for His people. The Sabbath was a sign of the covenant between God and the Israelites (Exodus 31:13). It emphasised the importance of rest, worship, and acknowledgment of God’s sovereignty over all things.
  • "Reverence my sanctuary": The Israelites were instructed to show deep respect and honour towards God’s sanctuary, the place where He chose to dwell among His people. This included the tabernacle and later the temple. It was a reminder of God’s holiness and the need for the people to approach Him with reverence and awe.

Meaning and Application:

  • Obedience to the Sabbath:Keeping the Sabbath holy was an important commandment for the Israelites. It involved setting aside one day in seven for rest, worship, and spiritual reflection. While the specific regulations of the Sabbath may not apply in the same way today, the principle of honouring God’s appointed time for rest and worship remains relevant. As Christians, we can learn from this verse by setting aside regular times for rest, personal reflection, and worship of God, acknowledging His lordship over our lives.
  • Reverence for God’s sanctuary:The sanctuary represented God’s presence among His people. In the New Testament, the concept of the sanctuary is expanded to include the body of believers as the temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 3:16). As Christians, we are called to honour and respect God’s dwelling within us and within the collective body of Christ, the Church. This involves treating one another with love, grace, and kindness, recognising the sacredness of our fellowship and the indwelling presence of God.
  • Connections to the broader context:
  • Leviticus 26:2 is situated within the context of the Mosaic Law, given to the Israelites as part of their covenant relationship with God. While the specific regulations may not apply directly to Christians today, the underlying principles of obedience, reverence, and honouring God’s presence are still applicable.
  • The blessings and curses described in Leviticus 26 highlight the importance of obedience and faithfulness to God’s commands. The chapter emphasises that obedience leads to blessings and disobedience results in consequences. However, it is essential to remember that as Christians, our salvation is not based on our own works or adherence to the Law, but on the grace and sacrifice of Jesus Christ.

Remember to study the Bible in its entirety and consider the teachings of the New Testament, which provide additional insights and guidance for Christians today.
