Leviticus 26:26

Posted on 18 September 2023
Listen to this article

“And when I have broken the staff of your bread, ten women shall bake your bread in one oven, and they shall deliver you your bread again by weight: and ye shall eat, and not be satisfied.”

Context:Leviticus 26 contains a series of blessings and curses that God outlined for the Israelites based on their obedience or disobedience to His commandments. In this particular verse, God describes one of the consequences that would come upon the Israelites if they turned away from Him and broke His covenant.

The “staff of bread” symbolizes sustenance or provision. It represents God’s provision and blessing upon His people. Breaking the staff of bread means that their provision would be diminished or inadequate.

Limited Satisfaction:God warns that if the Israelites were disobedient, He would reduce their food supply to such an extent that ten women would bake bread in one oven, and yet, it would not be enough to satisfy their hunger. This highlights the severity of the punishment for disobedience.

Consequences of Disobedience:This verse emphasizes the consequences of turning away from God’s commandments. It reveals that disobedience leads to scarcity, insufficiency, and dissatisfaction in every aspect of life. When the Israelites would eat, they would not be satisfied, despite the amount of food consumed.

Historical Context:During the time of the Old Testament, bread was a staple food, and the image of a broken staff of bread would have carried significant meaning for the Israelites. It would have been a clear indication of God’s judgment and a reminder of their need to repent and return to obedience.

Although this verse was specifically addressed to the Israelites of that time, we can still draw some general principles from it. It serves as a reminder that obedience to God’s commandments is important, and turning away from Him brings consequences. It highlights the significance of relying on God for provision and acknowledging His blessings in our lives.

Overall, Leviticus 26:26 warns of the consequences of disobedience and highlights the importance of obedience to God’s commandments in order to experience His provision, satisfaction, and blessings in our lives.
