Leviticus 26:36

Posted on 18 September 2023
Listen to this article

“And upon them that are left alive of you, I will send a faintness into their hearts in the lands of their enemies; and the sound of a shaken leaf shall chase them; and they shall flee, as fleeing from a sword; and they shall fall when none pursueth.”

Context:Leviticus is a book in the Old Testament that contains various laws and regulations given by God to the Israelites through Moses. In chapter 26, God outlines blessings for obedience and curses for disobedience to His commandments.

Historical Background:This verse is part of the section where God warns the Israelites about the consequences of disobedience. The Israelites were a chosen people who were set apart by God, and their obedience to His commandments was crucial for their well-being and prosperity.

The Consequence of Disobedience:In this verse, God describes one of the consequences of disobedience. He warns that those who survive the judgment or exile to foreign lands will experience a deep sense of fear and anxiety. Even the slightest noise, like the rustling of a leaf, would cause them to be filled with terror. They would flee in panic, imagining that they are being pursued by an enemy, and would eventually fall, even though there is no pursuer.

Spiritual Application:While this verse specifically addresses the Israelites, there are spiritual lessons that can be gleaned from it for believers today.

  • Obedience and Consequences:The verse highlights the principle that disobedience to God’s commands leads to negative consequences. God desires obedience from His people, and when we choose to live in disobedience, it can result in fear, anxiety, and a lack of peace in our lives.
  • The Power of God’s Judgment:The imagery of a shaken leaf causing terror emphasizes the power of God’s judgment and the impact it can have on individuals or nations. It serves as a reminder that God’s judgments are just and should not be taken lightly.
  • Trust in God’s Protection:This verse also highlights the importance of trusting in God’s protection and guidance. When we walk in obedience to Him, we can find comfort and security in knowing that He is with us and will watch over us, even in the face of adversity.
  • Repentance and Restoration:Although this verse speaks of the consequences of disobedience, it is essential to note that God’s desire is always for repentance and restoration. Even in times of judgment, God provides an opportunity for His people to turn back to Him, seek forgiveness, and experience His grace and mercy.

In summary, Leviticus 26:36 serves as a reminder of the consequences of disobedience and the importance of obedience to God’s commandments. It also emphasises the power of God’s judgment, the need for trust in His protection, and the opportunity for repentance and restoration.
