Listen to this article

“For I will have respect unto you, and make you fruitful, and multiply you, and establish my covenant with you.”

Leviticus 26 contains a section commonly known as the blessings and curses. In this chapter, God outlines the rewards for obedience and the consequences of disobedience to His commandments. Leviticus 26:9 specifically focuses on the blessings God promises to bestow upon the Israelites if they walk in obedience to Him.

Respect and Favor:God assures the Israelites that He will have respect or regard for them. This indicates that God would pay attention to their needs, concerns, and well-being. It highlights the intimate relationship between God and His people, which is built on love and care.

Fruitfulness and Multiplication:God promises to make the Israelites fruitful and multiply them. This blessing was not only physical but also extended to their land, crops, livestock, and families. It signifies God’s provision and abundance in their lives. Fruitfulness and multiplication are a recurring theme in the Bible, often representing the blessings of God’s covenant with His people.

Establishment of Covenant:God mentions that He will establish His covenant with the Israelites. This refers to the covenant made with their forefathers, particularly Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. God’s covenant involves His promises, blessings, and the obligations of the Israelites to follow His commandments. By establishing His covenant, God reaffirms His faithfulness and commitment to His people.

It’s important to note that the blessings mentioned in Leviticus 26 were specifically directed towards the Israelites under the Mosaic covenant. While the principles of God’s faithfulness and blessings can still be applied today, the immediate context is relevant to the Israelites in their historical and cultural setting.

Additionally, it’s crucial to consider the broader context of Leviticus 26 to fully grasp the significance of this verse. The chapter also includes warnings of the consequences that would follow if the Israelites turned away from God and broke His commandments.

Overall, Leviticus 26:9 highlights God’s desire to bless and establish a covenant with His people when they remain faithful and obedient. It demonstrates God’s loving nature and His willingness to pour out His favour upon those who walk in righteousness.
