Leviticus 27:15

Posted on 18 September 2023
Listen to this article

“And if he that sanctified it will redeem his house, then he shall add the fifth part of the money of thy estimation unto it, and it shall be his.”

Understanding the verse:

  • “He that sanctified it”: This refers to a person who has dedicated something to God, set it apart as holy, and offered it to the Lord.
  • “Redeem his house”: If the person who sanctified the item decides to redeem it, they can repurchase it for themselves.
  • “The fifth part of the money of thy estimation”: The person redeeming the item must add an additional one-fifth of the estimated value in order to reclaim it.
  • “It shall be his”: By redeeming the item, it returns to the ownership of the one who originally dedicated it.

Analysis:

  • This verse discusses the redemption of a house that has been sanctified. The term “house” here likely refers to a property or dwelling place.
  • In ancient Israel, individuals had the option to consecrate their house or property to God, much like other items such as animals or fields. This act of sanctification involved dedicating the property for a specific purpose or as an offering to the Lord.
  • However, the person who sanctified the house had the right to redeem it by paying the estimated value plus an additional one-fifth of its worth. This allowed them to regain ownership of the property while compensating the dedicated value.

Spiritual lessons:

  • Stewardship and dedication:The passage highlights the principle of stewardship, acknowledging that everything belongs to God. The act of sanctifying a house emphasizes the importance of dedicating our possessions and resources to God’s service.
  • Redemption and restoration:The concept of redemption in this verse points to God’s redemptive work in our lives. Through Christ, we are redeemed and restored to a right relationship with God. We can reclaim what has been consecrated to God by accepting His grace and salvation.
  • Sacrificial giving:The requirement to add an extra one-fifth of the estimated value demonstrates the cost of redemption. It encourages us to consider the value we place on things dedicated to God and reminds us of the sacrificial nature of giving.
  • Faithfulness and commitment:The verse encourages us to be faithful in our dedication and commitments to God. It reminds us that once something is sanctified, we should honor that commitment unless a legitimate redemption occurs.

Application:

  • Dedication and stewardship:Consider how you can dedicate your resources, talents, and possessions to God’s service. Seek to use them for His glory and the advancement of His kingdom.
  • Redemption and restoration:Reflect on the redemption you have received through Jesus Christ. Allow His redemptive work to bring healing, restoration, and transformation to every area of your life.
  • Sacrificial giving:Examine your attitude towards giving and generosity. Consider the cost and joy of sacrificially giving to God’s work and the needs of others.
  • Faithfulness and commitment:Evaluate your commitment to God and His purposes. Seek to honor the commitments you have made and faithfully serve Him in all areas of your life.

Remember, while Leviticus contains many laws and regulations that were specifically given to the Israelites in their cultural and historical context, we can still find valuable principles and lessons that can be applied to our lives today.
