Leviticus 27:3

Posted on 18 September 2023
Listen to this article

“And thy estimation shall be of the male from twenty years old even unto sixty years old, even thy estimation shall be fifty shekels of silver, after the shekel of the sanctuary.”

This verse is part of the final chapter of the book of Leviticus, which primarily deals with various laws and regulations given to the Israelites by God through Moses. Leviticus 27: focuses on the redemption of things dedicated to the Lord, including people, animals, and property.

Leviticus 27:3, the context is the dedication or consecration of a person to the service of God. It establishes the value or estimation that is to be placed on a male between the ages of twenty and sixty who is dedicated to God. This estimation is set at fifty shekels of silver, following the standard of the sanctuary shekel.

To gain a deeper understanding of this verse, it’s important to consider its historical and cultural context. In ancient Israel, the shekel was a unit of weight and currency. The shekel of the sanctuary: refers to the standardized weight of the shekel used for offerings and various transactions related to the temple. The estimation or value placed on a person or thing dedicated to God was based on this measurement.

The age range specified in Leviticus 27:3, from twenty to sixty years old, represents the prime years of a man’s life. This suggests that a person’s dedicated service to God was expected during these years of physical strength and maturity. The value assigned to the dedication reflects the significance and honor attached to such an offering.

It is important to note that this verse is specific to the Old Testament era: and the regulations of the Mosaic Law. The laws and practices described in Leviticus served as a means for the Israelites to demonstrate their devotion to God and to establish a holy community. However, with the coming of Jesus Christ and the establishment of the New Covenant, these ceremonial laws were fulfilled and superseded.

As Christians today, we do not follow the same system of offerings and redemptions found in Leviticus. Jesus Christ’s sacrifice: on the cross is the ultimate and complete offering for the forgiveness of sins. We are now called to dedicate our lives to God in response to His grace and salvation, living according to the teachings of Jesus and guided by the Holy Spirit.

In conclusion, Leviticus 27:3: highlights the estimation or value placed on a man dedicated to the service of God during the Old Testament era. It demonstrates the significance and honor given to those who devoted themselves to the Lord. While we no longer follow the same ceremonial laws today, this verse reminds us of the importance of dedicating our lives to God and serving Him with our whole being.
