Leviticus 3:12

Posted on 26 August 2023
Listen to this article

“And if his offering be a goat, then he shall offer it before the Lord.”

Context:Leviticus is a book in the Old Testament that contains laws and regulations given by God to the Israelites through Moses. Leviticus 3 focuses on the instructions for various offerings to be presented to the Lord, including peace offerings.

Meaning and Significance:

  • The significance of offerings:The verse refers to the offering of a goat as a peace offering before the Lord. In the Old Testament, offerings were an essential part of Israelite worship. They served as a means for the people to express their devotion, seek forgiveness, and maintain a right relationship with God. These offerings were also a way to demonstrate gratitude and offer thanks to God.
  • The purpose of peace offerings:Peace offerings were a specific type of offering meant to express gratitude and establish peace and fellowship between the worshipper and God. They were voluntary and symbolized a joyful and harmonious relationship with God. Peace offerings could be made with various types of animals, including goats, cattle, and sheep.
  • The role of goats in peace offerings:Goats were commonly used as offerings in the Israelite sacrificial system. The choice of offering a goat may have depended on factors such as availability, personal preference, or the worshipper’s circumstances. Regardless of the type of animal offered, the emphasis was on the attitude of the worshipper and the sincerity of their offering.

Drawing lessons for today:While the Levitical system of sacrifices and offerings is no longer practised today, we can draw some principles from this verse:

  • Worship and gratitude: The offering of a goat reminds us of the importance of expressing worship, gratitude, and thanksgiving to God. As believers, we can offer our prayers, praise, and thanksgiving as a spiritual sacrifice (Hebrews 13:15).
  • The heart of the worshipper:God looks beyond the outward form of the offering and focuses on the heart and attitude of the worshipper (1 Samuel 16:7). Our worship and offerings to God should come from a sincere and genuine heart.
  • Peace and fellowship with God:The peace offerings symbolize the desire for peace and fellowship with God. In the New Testament, Jesus Christ became the ultimate sacrifice for our sins, reconciling us to God and providing us with true peace (Romans 5:1; Ephesians 2:14-16).

Conclusion:Leviticus 3:12 highlights the offering of a goat as a peace offering before the Lord. It reminds us of the importance of worship, gratitude, and maintaining a harmonious relationship with God. Although the Levitical sacrificial system is no longer practised today, we can draw valuable lessons from this verse, focusing on the sincerity of our hearts, the offering of spiritual sacrifices, and the peace and fellowship we have through Jesus Christ.
