Leviticus 6:28

Posted on 28 August 2023
Listen to this article

"But the earthen vessel wherein it is sodden shall be broken: and if it be sodden in a brasen pot, it shall be both scoured, and rinsed in water."

Context:Leviticus is a book in the Old Testament that primarily deals with the regulations and laws given to the Israelites by God through Moses. It covers various aspects of their religious, ceremonial, and moral practices. Leviticus 6 specifically addresses the laws concerning the burnt offerings and the duties of the priests.

Explanation:

In Leviticus 6:28, God provides instructions regarding the handling of the remains of the sin offering. When a sin offering was made, the flesh of the animal was to be boiled in a pot. The verse states that if the pot used was made of earthenware, it was to be broken. However, if the pot was made of bronze, it was to be thoroughly cleaned by scouring and rinsing in water.

Symbolic Meaning:

The significance of breaking the earthen vessel lies in its symbolic representation of contamination. An earthen vessel, being porous, would absorb the impurities and sins associated with the offering. Breaking it ensured that the impurity did not persist or contaminate anything else.

On the other hand, the use of a brass or bronze pot emphasized the need for cleanliness and purification. Bronze was a durable and non-porous material, allowing for easy cleansing. This symbolized the importance of maintaining purity and holiness in the rituals and service to God.

Spiritual Lessons:

  • Utmost respect for God:The meticulous instructions regarding the handling of the sin offering highlight the seriousness and reverence the Israelites were to have toward God and His laws. It reminds us of the need to approach God with reverence and honor in our worship.
  • The consequences of sin:The breaking of the earthen vessel represents the consequences of sin. Sin has a corrupting effect and can contaminate our lives. It is essential to recognize the destructive nature of sin and take appropriate measures to rid ourselves of its influence.
  • Cleansing and forgiveness:The cleaning of the brass pot reminds us of the importance of repentance and seeking forgiveness from God. God provides a way for us to be cleansed from our sins and restored through genuine repentance and faith in Him.
  • Holiness and purity:The distinction between the earthen vessel and the brass pot highlights the need for holiness and purity in our lives. As Christians, we are called to live a life set apart for God, pursuing righteousness and avoiding anything that could defile us spiritually.

Application:Leviticus 6:28 serves as a reminder of the seriousness of sin and the importance of seeking forgiveness and purification through Jesus Christ. It encourages us to examine our lives, repent of our sins, and pursue holiness. It also reminds us to approach God with reverence and respect, acknowledging His holiness and authority.

As we meditate on this verse, let us strive to maintain a pure and devoted heart in our relationship with God and in our interactions with others, seeking forgiveness and cleansing whenever we fall short.
