Leviticus 7:27

Posted on 28 August 2023
Listen to this article

“Whatsoever soul it be that eateth any manner of blood, even that soul shall be cut off from his people.”

Context:The book of Leviticus is part of the Old Testament and contains various laws and regulations given by God to the Israelites through Moses. Leviticus 7 specifically deals with the laws concerning the offerings and sacrifices made by the Israelites.

The Prohibition of Consuming Blood:In Leviticus 7:27, God prohibits the consumption of any kind of blood. This command is reiterated multiple times throughout the Bible (e.g., Leviticus 17:10-14; Acts 15:20). In the Old Testament, the Israelites were forbidden from eating blood because the life of an animal was considered sacred and belonged to God (Leviticus 17:11).

Symbolic and Spiritual Significance:The prohibition against consuming blood holds symbolic and spiritual significance. It serves as a reminder of God’s authority over life and death. By abstaining from blood, the Israelites acknowledged their dependence on God as the giver of life. Additionally, the prohibition set the Israelites apart from the surrounding pagan cultures, distinguishing them as a holy people dedicated to following God’s laws.

Application to Christians:While the Old Testament laws, including the prohibition against consuming blood, were given specifically to the Israelites, Christians can draw spiritual principles from them. In the New Testament, the apostles, guided by the Holy Spirit, emphasized the importance of abstaining from things polluted by idols, sexual immorality, and blood (Acts 15:19-20). This instruction aimed to maintain unity and promote a godly lifestyle among believers.

Fulfillment in Jesus Christ:The New Testament reveals that Jesus Christ fulfilled the requirements of the law on behalf of believers (Matthew 5:17). Through His sacrifice on the cross, Jesus became the ultimate and perfect offering for the forgiveness of sins. As Christians, our salvation is not dependent on following the ceremonial laws of the Old Testament, including the prohibition against consuming blood. However, it is still important for believers to exercise discernment and avoid practices that are contrary to God’s principles.

In summary, Leviticus 7:27 prohibits the consumption of blood, emphasizing the sacredness of life and the Israelites’ obedience to God’s commandments. While Christians are not bound by these ceremonial laws, the principle of honoring God’s authority over life remains relevant. We are called to live in a manner that is pleasing to God, abstaining from practices that compromise our faith and compromise our witness as followers of Christ.
