Leviticus 7:33

Listen to this article

"He among the sons of Aaron, that offereth the blood of the peace offerings, and the fat, shall have the right shoulder for his part."

Context:Leviticus is a book in the Old Testament that provides instructions for the Israelites regarding worship, sacrifices, and laws for holy living. In particular, Leviticus 7 discusses the regulations for the peace offerings.

The Sons of Aaron:The verse mentions "He among the sons of Aaron." Aaron was the brother of Moses and the high priest of Israel. The sons of Aaron, known as the priests, were responsible for performing various rituals and sacrifices on behalf of the people.

Blood of the Peace Offerings:Peace offerings were a type of sacrifice made voluntarily by individuals who wanted to express gratitude or make a vow to God. The peace offering involved the slaughtering of an animal, and its blood was sprinkled on the altar.

The Fat:In the Old Testament, the fat of an animal was considered the choicest part and symbolised the best portion of the offering. It was to be burned on the altar as a pleasing aroma to the Lord.

The Right Shoulder:According to Leviticus 7:33, the priest who offered the blood of the peace offering and the fat was entitled to receive the right shoulder as his portion. This portion of the animal was given to the priest as a part of their provision, ensuring that they were provided for in their service to God.

Symbolism and Application:The right shoulder being given to the priest symbolises honour and respect for their role as mediators between God and the people. It demonstrates God’s provision for those who serve Him faithfully. It also serves as a reminder that God desires His people to support and care for those who minister to them.

  • Gratitude and Sacrifice:The peace offering was a voluntary act of gratitude towards God. It reminds us of the importance of expressing our thankfulness to God for His blessings and provision.
  • God’s Provision:Just as the priests were provided for through the offerings, we can trust that God will provide for those who serve Him faithfully. This principle extends to the support and care of ministers and leaders within the church today.
  • Honour and Respect:The priests held a significant role in the Old Testament, and their honour and respect were demonstrated through the allocation of the right shoulder. Similarly, we should honour and respect those who serve God’s purposes today, recognising their dedication and contributions to the community of faith.

Remember, as we study the Old Testament, it is important to understand the historical and cultural context while also drawing relevant principles and lessons that can be applied to our lives today.
