Leviticus 7:6

Posted on 28 August 2023
Listen to this article

“Every male among the priests shall eat thereof: it shall be eaten in the holy place: it is most holy.”

Context:Leviticus is a book of the Old Testament that provides detailed instructions to the Israelites regarding their worship and religious practices. It focuses on the laws and regulations given by God to Moses for the people of Israel.

Explanation: Leviticus 7:6 is a specific instruction regarding the consumption of the meat of certain offerings made by the Israelites. In this verse, it is specified that the portion of the offering designated for the priests should be eaten by the male priests in the holy place, as it is considered “most holy.”

Key Points:

  • Consumption of priestly portions:According to the Levitical law, the priests had specific portions from the offerings made by the Israelites that were designated for their sustenance. These portions were set apart as holy and were meant for the priests to eat. Leviticus 7:6 establishes the rule that only the male priests should partake of these portions.
  • Eating in the holy place:The verse states that the consumption of the priestly portions should take place in the holy place. The “holy place” refers to the tabernacle or, later, the temple. It was the designated location where the priests carried out their duties and performed rituals. This requirement emphasized the sanctity and reverence associated with the act of eating these offerings.
  • The sanctity of the offering:The verse emphasizes that the portion set aside for the priests is “most holy.” This designation signifies that the offering is considered extremely sacred and should be handled with utmost care and respect. By eating the holy portion, the priests symbolically partake in the act of worship and communion with God.

Relevance/Application:

  • Priestly role and responsibility:Leviticus 7:6 highlights the unique role of the priests in the religious life of Israel. The priests were chosen by God to serve Him and mediate between Him and the people. Their consumption of the holy portions emphasized their consecrated status and the importance of their role in the spiritual life of the community.
  • Reverence for God’s provisions:The requirement to eat the offerings in the holy place underscores the reverence the Israelites were to have for God and His provisions. It reminds us of the need to honor and respect the sacred gifts that God provides for our sustenance and well-being.
  • Foreshadowing of Christ:The rituals and practices described in Leviticus, including the consumption of the priestly portions, foreshadowed the work of Christ as the ultimate High Priest and the perfect sacrifice for sin. Jesus referred to Himself as the “bread of life” (John 6:35), and through His sacrifice, He invites us to partake in His life and receive eternal sustenance.

Remember that while studying Leviticus can provide valuable insights into the religious practices of the Israelites, Christians are not bound by the ceremonial laws of the Old Covenant. The sacrificial system and priestly duties were fulfilled in Christ, and believers now have direct access to God through Jesus Christ, our High Priest (Hebrews 4:14-16).
