Leviticus 8:12

Posted on 28 August 2023
Listen to this article

“And he poured of the anointing oil upon Aaron’s head, and anointed him, to sanctify him.”

Context:Leviticus is the third book of the Bible and is primarily concerned with the laws and regulations for the Israelites as they establish the tabernacle and priesthood. Leviticus 8 describes the consecration of Aaron and his sons as priests.

The anointing oil:In this verse, the anointing oil is poured upon Aaron’s head. The anointing oil used in the Old Testament had a special significance. It was a blend of various spices and oils, including myrrh, cinnamon, calamus, cassia, and olive oil, which was carefully prepared according to God’s instructions (Exodus 30:22-33). The anointing oil symbolised the presence and power of the Holy Spirit and was used to consecrate priests, prophets, and kings for their respective roles.

Aaron’s anointing:The anointing of Aaron was a significant moment in the establishment of the priesthood. The pouring of the anointing oil on Aaron’s head signified his consecration and setting apart for the office of high priest. Through this act, Aaron was designated as the chosen representative of the people before God, responsible for offering sacrifices and interceding on their behalf. The anointing with oil was a visible and symbolic act to mark Aaron as God’s chosen servant.

Sanctification:The purpose of anointing Aaron was to sanctify him, meaning to set him apart for holy service. Sanctification involves being separated from ordinary or common use and dedicated to a sacred or divine purpose. By anointing Aaron with oil, he was consecrated and made holy for his role as the high priest. This act emphasised the importance of holiness in the priestly office and set a precedent for future generations of priests.

Application:While the Old Testament priesthood and the rituals associated with it are no longer practised today, there are principles we can learn from this verse. As Christians, we are called to be a royal priesthood (1 Peter 2:9), and the anointing of Aaron can symbolise our anointing as believers in Christ. Through faith in Jesus, we receive the Holy Spirit, who empowers and equips us for service in God’s kingdom (Acts 1:8). We are sanctified and set apart to live a life that honours God, reflecting His holiness and love to the world.

In conclusion, Leviticus 8:12 describes the anointing of Aaron, the high priest, with the sacred anointing oil. This act symbolised his consecration and sanctification for the priestly role. As Christians, we can draw lessons from this verse regarding our anointing by the Holy Spirit and our call to live a life dedicated to God’s service.
