Leviticus 9:16

Posted on 31 August 2023
Listen to this article

“And he brought the burnt offering, and offered it according to the manner.”

Context:Leviticus 9 describes the consecration of Aaron and his sons as priests in the Tabernacle, which was a central place of worship for the Israelites during their time in the wilderness. In this particular verse, the focus is on the burnt offering, which was one of the various types of sacrifices presented to God.

Significance of the burnt offering:The burnt offering was a voluntary offering made to God as an act of worship and dedication. It involved the complete burning of the sacrificial animal on the altar. The burnt offering symbolized surrender, commitment, and atonement for sin. It demonstrated the worshiper’s desire to submit their whole life to God.

The importance of following the prescribed manner:The verse emphasizes that the burnt offering was offered “according to the manner.” This highlights the significance of adhering to the precise instructions given by God regarding the sacrificial system. The manner in which the offering was presented was crucial because it reflected obedience, reverence, and respect for God’s commands. It also ensured that the offering was presented in the way that God had ordained, thus maintaining the sanctity and integrity of the worship.

Lessons for believers today:

  • Obedience and reverence: Just as the Israelites were instructed to offer sacrifices according to the manner, we, as believers, are called to obey God’s commands and worship Him with reverence. God desires that our worship and service be offered in accordance with His revealed will. It is important for us to study His Word, understand His instructions, and seek to follow them faithfully.
  • Wholehearted surrender: The burnt offering’s complete consumption on the altar symbolizes the idea of offering our entire lives to God. As Christians, we are called to present ourselves as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God (Romans 12:1). This involves surrendering our will, desires, and ambitions to God, allowing Him to guide and direct our paths.
  • Atonement through Christ: The burnt offering in the Old Testament served as a temporary atonement for sin. However, in the New Testament, Jesus Christ became the ultimate sacrifice for our sins. Through His death on the cross, He offered Himself as the perfect and complete sacrifice, once and for all, providing redemption and forgiveness for all who believe in Him. As we reflect on the burnt offering, it points us to the sacrificial work of Jesus, reminding us of the atonement He has accomplished on our behalf.

In conclusion, Leviticus 9:16 highlights the importance of offering sacrifices to God according to His prescribed manner. It reminds us of the significance of obedience, reverence, and wholehearted surrender in our worship and service to God. Additionally, it points us to the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus Christ, who fulfilled the sacrificial system and became the perfect sacrifice for our sins.
