In Malachi 3, the prophet speaks on behalf of God, bringing forth a message of purification and judgment. The chapter starts with the promise of a messenger who will prepare the way for the Lord’s coming. This messenger is identified as John the Baptist in the New Testament.
The Lord declares His imminent arrival and warns that He will be like a refiner’s fire, purifying the priests and people of Israel. He expresses His displeasure with their corrupt practices, including sorcery, adultery, false oaths, and oppression of workers and widows.
God challenges the people to return to Him and promises to open the windows of heaven, pouring out blessings upon those who are faithful in their tithes and offerings. He encourages them to test Him in this matter and see if He will not abundantly bless them.
The Lord also speaks of a book of remembrance, in which the names of those who fear Him and meditate on His name are recorded. He promises that they will be His treasured possession in the day of judgment.
The chapter concludes with a warning of the coming judgment, where God will distinguish between the righteous and the wicked, rewarding the former and punishing the latter.
