Micah 1 begins with a prophetic message from the Lord directed towards Samaria and Jerusalem. The prophet declares that the Lord is coming from His holy temple to judge His people. The cities will be devastated, and their foundations will crumble. Micah uses wordplay to describe the impending destruction, as the names of the cities are linked to their downfall.
The prophet weeps and mourns over the calamity that will befall the cities, as their sins have brought about this judgment. Micah also calls upon the people to join in the lamentation and mourning. He warns the inhabitants of Gath to not rejoice over the downfall of Judah, for the Lord’s judgment will also come upon them.
Micah then proclaims the inevitability of the destruction, expressing his sorrow and anguish over what is to come. He compares the condition of the daughter of Zion to that of a woman in labor, experiencing great pain and sorrow.
The chapter concludes with a call for the people to shave their heads and mourn as a sign of their repentance, for the judgment of the Lord is at hand.
