Numbers 1:21

Posted on 1 October 2023
Listen to this article

“Those that were numbered of them, even of the tribe of Reuben, were forty and six thousand and five hundred.”

Historical Context:The book of Numbers is the fourth book of the Old Testament, which focuses on the Israelites’ journey from Mount Sinai to the Promised Land. The events of Numbers take place after the Israelites’ exodus from Egypt and the establishment of the covenant with God at Mount Sinai.

The Tribe of Reuben:In this verse, we see the specific count of the tribe of Reuben during the census. Reuben was the firstborn son of Jacob and Leah, making it one of the twelve tribes of Israel. The tribe of Reuben played a significant role in Israel’s history.

Census and Numbering:The book of Numbers gets its name from the various censuses conducted to count the people of Israel. These censuses were conducted to organise the Israelites, establish their military capacity, and distribute the responsibilities related to the tabernacle and its service. The census helped to determine the size of each tribe, which was important for various aspects of their journey and settlement.

The Importance of Numbers:The detailed counting of the tribes demonstrated God’s concern for order and organisation. Each tribe had a specific role to play in the overall plan and purpose of God. The counting of the tribes showed that God was actively involved in the lives of His people and had a specific plan for each tribe.

Spiritual Application:While Numbers 1:21 primarily provides historical information, we can draw spiritual lessons from it. The numbering of the tribes reminds us of the importance of order, organisation, and the unique role that each individual has in God’s plan. It reminds us that God knows us individually, and He has a purpose for each of our lives.

  • Unity and Cooperation:The census also highlighted the need for unity and cooperation among the tribes. The Israelites were a diverse community, and their unity was crucial for their journey and the fulfilment of God’s promises. It serves as a reminder for us today to value unity within the body of Christ and work together for the advancement of God’s Kingdom.
  • Faithfulness and Stewardship:The census in Numbers can also remind us of the importance of faithfulness and stewardship in fulfilling our responsibilities. Each tribe had its designated tasks and duties, and it was essential for them to fulfil their roles faithfully. As believers, we are called to be faithful stewards of the gifts and responsibilities God has entrusted to us.

In summary, Numbers 1:21 provides us with historical information about the tribe of Reuben during the census. It reminds us of the significance of order, unity, and cooperation within God’s plan. It also emphasises the importance of faithfulness and stewardship in fulfilling our roles and responsibilities as believers.
