Numbers 1:39

Posted on 7 October 2023
Listen to this article

“Those that were numbered of them, even of the tribe of Issachar, were fifty and four thousand and four hundred.”

Context:The book of Numbers is the fourth book of the Bible, and it primarily focuses on the Israelites’ journey from Mount Sinai to the Promised Land. In chapter 1, God commanded Moses to take a census of the Israelites, counting all the men who were twenty years old and above, fit for military service.

Tribe of Issachar:In this verse, the focus is on the tribe of Issachar. Issachar was one of the twelve tribes of Israel, and it was the ninth son of Jacob and Leah (Genesis 30:18). The tribe of Issachar settled in the northern part of the Promised Land.

The Number Counted:The verse states that the tribe of Issachar had a total of 54,400 men who were counted in the census. This count specifically includes those who were twenty years old and above and were fit for military duty. This number represents the strength and size of the tribe.

The Significance of the Census:The purpose of the census was to establish the number of men available for military service among the Israelites. This information was crucial for organizing the army and planning their journeys through the wilderness. It demonstrated the organisation and order that God desired among His people.

Unity and Cooperation:The census emphasised the importance of each tribe’s contribution to the whole nation. It showed that all the tribes were equal in value and had a part to play in God’s plan. The inclusion of Issachar in the census highlighted their role in supporting and defending the nation of Israel.

Symbolic Meaning:The number 54,400 holds no specific spiritual significance but serves as a record of the tribe’s size during that period. However, it’s important to note that throughout the Bible, numbers often carry symbolic meanings. They can represent completeness, divine order, or specific spiritual concepts. In this verse, the focus is primarily on the numerical count rather than symbolic representation.

Application:

  • Unity and Diversity:The census of the tribes reminds us of the importance of unity and cooperation within the body of Christ. Just as each tribe had a specific role to play in the Israelite community, every believer has unique gifts and abilities that contribute to the overall health and growth of the Church (1 Corinthians 12:12-27).
  • Individual Responsibility:The counting of each tribe’s members also serves as a reminder that God values each individual and their contribution. Each person counted in the census represented a unique life and story. Similarly, in our own lives, God calls us to fulfil our individual roles and responsibilities in His kingdom, knowing that we all have a part to play (Romans 12:4-8).
  • Organisation and Order:The census in Numbers demonstrates God’s desire for organisation and order among His people. As believers, we are called to live disciplined lives, walking in obedience to God’s Word and following His direction. This includes being accountable, participating in community, and utilising our gifts for the benefit of others (1 Corinthians 14:40, Ephesians 4:16).

In summary, Numbers 1:39 recounts the number of men from the tribe of Issachar who were counted in the census. This verse emphasises the tribe’s contribution to the nation of Israel and highlights the importance of unity, cooperation, and individual responsibility within the community of believers.
